倘若事实确乎如此——也有一些人说，我们的公益心并没有沦丧到像普特南和其他一些人认为的那种地步——那么美国梦似乎将进一步萎缩，沦为追逐狭隘私利，这将对社会的福祉带来可怕的后果。
不过，故事还有它的另一面。并不是所有美国人都是自私、懒惰、祈求不劳而获、对他们的人类同胞漠不关心的。那一类美国人的确存在。但是依然还有千百万其他美国人，勤奋工作，实现着美国梦，并且通过在社区里的个人慈善行为和志愿活动，将他们的好运和其他不太幸运的人分享。然而，也有越来越多品格优良的美国人，他们干脆放弃了美国梦。他们曾经信仰，他们曾经保持着信念，辛勤工作，孜孜不倦，不断完善技术，为子孙后代更美好的未来而积蓄、而牺牲，为他们的社区服务——但还是入不敷出。他们按照脚本演出，却只落得个沮丧失意的结局。尽管略占多数（51％）的美国人依然相信美国梦有可能实现， 令人震惊的是，有三分之一（34％）的美国人已经不再相信其实现的可能＇75＇。对他们中许多人而言，一张乐透彩票的价钱就成了实现美国梦的唯一机会了。
不幸的是，近年来被娇纵和被低估的队伍正在膨胀，而仍然有资格宣称他们能够实现美国梦的美国人相比之下却在减少。结果，美国梦遭受了不可估量的打击，丧失了它相当部分的力量——过去当它作为定义性的故事把美国人民团结在一起时，曾经一度拥有的力量。
