persecutors to have nothing so very remarkable to say on the
greatest of subjects as to render his volunteering察 on his own
account察 at all incumbent on his conscience察 but察 he has his
followers and Mrs Snagsby is of the number。 Mrs Snagsby has but
recently taken a passage upward by the vessel察Chadband察and her
attention was attracted to that Bark A 1察when she was something
flushed by the hot weather。

the gift of holding forth for four hours at a stretch察 prepares the
little drawing´room for tea。 All the furniture is shaken and dusted察
the portraits of Mr and Mrs Snagsby are touched up with a wet
cloth察 the best tea´service is set forth察 and there is excellent
provision made of dainty new bread察 crusty twists察 cool fresh
butter察 thin slices of ham察 tongue and German sausage察 and
delicate little rows of anchovies nestling in parsley察not to mention
new´laid eggs察 to be brought up warm in a napkin察 and hot
buttered toast。 For察 Chadband is rather a consuming vessel!the
persecutors say a gorging vessel察 and can wield such weapons of
the flesh as a knife and fork察remarkably well。
Mr Snagsby in his best coat察 looking at all the preparations
when they are completed察 and coughing his cough of deference
behind his hand察 says to Mrs Snagsby察 At what time did you
expect Mr and Mrs Chadband察my love拭院
^At six察院says Mrs Snagsby。
Mr Snagsby observes in a mild and casual way察that ^it¨s gone
that。 ̄
^Perhaps you¨d like to begin without them察院 is Mrs Snagsby¨s
reproachful remark。
Mr Snagsby does look as if he would like it very much察but he
says察 with his cough of mildness察 No察 my dear察 no。 I merely
named the time。 ̄
^What¨s time察院says Mrs Snagsby察 to eternity拭院
^Very true察 my dear察院 says Mr Snagsby。 ^Only when a person
lays in victuals for tea察 a person does it with a view!perhaps!
more to time。 And when a time is named for having tea察it¨s better
to come up to it。 ̄
^To come up to it 院Mrs Snagsby repeats with severity。 ^Up to

it As if Mr Chadband was a fighter 院
^Not at all察my dear察院says Mr Snagsby。
Here察 Guster察 who had been looking out of the bedroom
window察 comes rustling and scratching down the little staircase
like a popular ghost察 and察 falling flushed into the drawing´room察
announces that Mr and Mrs Chadband have appeared in the court。
The bell at the inner door in the passage immediately thereafter
tinkling察 she is admonished by Mrs Snagsby察 on pain of instant
reconsignment to her patron saint察 not to omit the ceremony of
announcement。 Much discomposed in her nerves which were
previously in the best order by this threat察 she so fearfully
mutilates that point of state as to announce ^Mr and Mrs
Cheeseming察least which察Imeantersay察whatsername 院and retires
conscience´stricken from the presence。
Mr Chadband is a large yellow man察 with a fat smile察 and a
general appearance of having a good deal of train oil in his system。
Mrs Chadband is a stern察 severe´looking察 silent woman。 Mr
Chadband moves softly and cumbrously察 not unlike a bear who
has been taught to walk upright。 He is very much embarrassed
about the arms察 as if they were inconvenient to him察 and he
wanted to grovel察is very much in a perspiration about the head察
and never speaks without first putting up his great hand察 as
delivering a token to his hearers that he is going to edify them。
^My friends察院says Mr Chadband。 ^Peace be on this house On
the master thereof察on the mistress thereof察on the young maidens察
and on the young men My friends察why do I wish for peace拭What
is peace拭Is it war拭No。 Is it strife拭No。 Is it lovely察and gentle察and
beautiful察and pleasant察and serene察and joyful拭O yes Therefore察
my friends察I wish for peace察upon you and upon yours。 ̄

In consequence of Mrs Snagsby looking deeply edified察 Mr
Snagsby thinks it expedient on the whole to say Amen察 which is
well received。
^Now察 my friends察院 proceeds Mr Chadband察 since I am upon
this theme! ̄
Guster presents herself。 Mrs Snagsby察in a spectral bass voice察
and without removing her eyes from Chadband察says察with dread
distinctness察 Go away 院
^Now察 my friends察院 says Chadband察 since I am upon this
theme察and in my lowly path improving it! ̄
Guster is heard unaccountably to murmur ^one thousing seven
hundred and eighty´two。 ̄ The spectral voice repeats more
solemnly察 Go away 院
^Now察 my friends察院 says Mr Chadband察 we will inquire in a
spirit of love!^
Still Guster reiterates ^one thousing seven hundred and eighty´
two。 ̄
Mr Chadband察 pausing with the resignation of a man
accustomed to be persecuted察 and languidly folding up his chin
into his fat smile察says察 Let us hear the maiden Speak察maiden 院
^One thousing seven hundred and eighty´two察if you please察sir。
Which he wish to know what the shilling ware for察院says Guster察
breathless。
^For拭院returns Mrs Chadband。 ^For his fare 院
Guster replied that ^he insistes on one and eightpence察 or on
summonsizzing the party。 ̄ Mrs Snagsby and Mrs Chadband are
proceeding to grow shrill in indignation察 when Mr Chadband
quiets the tumult by lifting up his hand。
^My friends察院says he察 I remember a duty unfulfilled yesterday。

It is right that I should be chastened in some penalty。 I ought not
to murmur。 Rachel察pay the eightpence 院
While Mrs Snagsby察 drawing her breath察 looks hard at Mr
Snagsby察as who should say察 you hear this apostle 院and while Mr
Chadband glows with humility and train oil察Mrs Chadband pays
the money。 It is Mr Chadband¨s habit!it is the head and front of
his pretensions indeed!to keep this sort of debtor and creditor
account in the smallest items察and to post it publicly on the most
trival occasions。
^My friends察院says Chadb
