opinion察 my dears察 that he has not chosen his profession

advisedly。 ̄

Ada looked so very anxious now察 that I asked Mrs Badger on

what she founded her supposition拭

^My dear Miss Summerson察院 she replied察 on Mr Carstone¨s

character and conduct。 He is of such a very easy disposition察that

probably he would never think it worth while to mention how he

really feels察but察he feels languid about the profession。 He has not

that positive interest in it which makes it his vocation。 If he has

any decided impression in reference to it察I should say it was that

it is a tiresome pursuit。 Now察 this is not promising。 Young men察

like Mr Allan Woodcourt察who take it from a strong interest in all

that it can do察will find some reward in it through a great deal of

work for a very little money察 and through years of considerable

endurance and disappointment。 But I am quite convinced that this

would never be the case with Mr Carstone。 ̄

^Does Mr Badger think so too拭院asked Ada timidly。

^Why察院said Mr Badger察 to tell the truth察Miss Clare察this view

of the matter had not occurred to me until Mrs Badger mentioned

it。 But察when Mrs Badger put it in that light察I naturally gave great

consideration to it察knowing that Mrs Badger¨s mind察in addition to

its natural advantages察 has had the rare advantage of being

formed by two such very distinguished I will even say

illustrations public men as Captain Swosser of the Royal Navy

and Professor Dingo。 The conclusion at which I have arrived is!

in short察is Mrs Badger¨s conclusion。 ̄

^It was a maxim of Captain Swosser¨s察院 said Mrs Badger察

^speaking in his figurative naval manner察 that when you make

pitch hot察you cannot make it too hot察and that if you only have to

swab a plank察you should swab it as if Davy Jones were after you。

It appears to me that this maxim is applicable to the medical察 as

well as to the nautical profession。 ̄

^To all professions察院 observed Mr Badger。 ^It was admirably

said by Captain Swosser。 Beautifully said。 ̄

^People objected to Professor Dingo察when we were staying in

the North of Devon察after our marriage察院said Mrs Badger察 that he

disfigured some of the houses and other buildings察by chipping off

fragments of those edifices with his little geological hammer。 But

the Professor replied察 that he knew of no building察 save the

Temple of Science。 The principle is the same察I think拭院

    ^Precisely the same察院 said Mr Badger。 ^Finely expressed。 The

Professor made the same remark察 Miss Summerson察 in his last

illness察when his mind wandering he insisted on keeping his little

hammer under the pillow察and chipping at the countenances of the

attendants。 The ruling passion 院

Although we could have dispensed with the length at which Mr

and Mrs Badger pursued the conversation察we both felt that it was

disinterested in them to express the opinion they had

communicated to us察and that there was a great probability of its

being sound。 We agreed to say nothing to Mr Jarndyce until we

had spoken to Richard察 and察 as he was coming next evening察 we

resolved to have a very serious talk with him。

So察 after he had been a little while with Ada察 I went in and

found my darling as I knew she would be prepared to consider

him thoroughly right in whatever he said。

^And how do you get on察Richard拭院said I。 I always sat down on

the other side of him。 He made quite a sister of me。

    ^O well enough 院said Richard。

^He can¨t say better than that察 Esther察 can he拭院 cried my pet察

triumphantly。

I tried to look at my pet in the wisest manner察but of course I

couldn¨t。

    ^Well enough拭院I repeated。

    ^Yes察院 said Richard察 well enough。 It¨s rather jog´trotty and

humdrum。 But it¨ll do as well as any thing else 院

^O my dear Richard 院I remonstrated。

    ^What¨s the matter拭院said Richard。

^Do as well as anything else 院

^I don¨t think there¨s any harm in that察 Dame Durden察院 said

Ada察looking so confidingly at me across him Because if it will do

as well as anything else察it will do very well察I hope。 ̄

^O yes察I hope so察院returned Richard察carelessly tossing his hair

from his forehead。 ^After all察it may be only a kind of probation till

our suit is!I forgot though。 I am not to mention the suit。

Forbidden ground O yes察 it¨s all right enough。 Let us talk about

something else。 ̄

Ada would have done so察 willingly察 and with a full persuasion

that we had brought the question to a most satisfactory state。 But I

thought it would be useless to stop there察so I began again。

^No察 but Richard察院 said I察 and my dear Ada Consider how

important it is to you both察 and what a point of honour it is

towards your cousin察that you察Richard察should be quite in earnest

without any reservation。 I think we had better talk about this察

really察Ada。 It will be too late察very soon。 ̄

^O yes We must talk about it 院said Ada。 ^But I think Richard

is right。 ̄

What was the use of my trying to look wise察 when she was so

pretty察and so engaging察and so fond of him

^Mr and Mrs Badger were here yesterday察 Richard察院 said I察

^and they seemed disposed to think that you had no great liking

for the profession。 ̄

^Did they though拭院 said Richard察 O Well察 that rather alters

the case察because I had no idea that they thought so察and I should

not have liked to disappoint or inconvenience them。 The fact is察I

don¨t care much about it。 But O察it don¨t matter It¨ll do as well as

anything else 院

    ^You hear him察Ada 院said I。

^The fact is察院 Richard proceeded察 half thoughtfully and half

jocosely察 it is not quite in my way。 I don¨t take to it。 And I get too

much of Mrs Bayham Badger¨s first and second。 ̄

^I am sure that¨s very natural 院cried Ada察quite delighted。 ^The

very thing we both said yesterday察Esther 院

^Then察院 pursued Richard察 it¨s monotonous察 and today is too

like yesterday察and tomorrow is too like today。 ̄

^But I am afraid察院 said I察 this is an objection to all kinds of

application!to life itself察 except under some very uncommon

circumstances。 ̄

^Do you think so拭院 returned Richard察 still considering。

^Perhaps Ha Why察 then察 you know察院 he added察 suddenly

becoming gay again察 we travel outside a circle察to w
