the young man would lose his situation察and that I might ruin him。

Sometimes察I thought of confiding in Richard察but was deterred by

the possibility of his fighting Mr Guppy察and giving him black eyes。

Sometimes察 I thought察 should I frown at him察 or shake my head。

Then I felt I could not do it。 Sometimes察 I considered whether I

should write to his mother察but that ended in my being convinced

that to open a correspondence would be to make the matter worse。

I always came to the conclusion察 finally察 that I could do nothing。

Mr Guppy¨s perseverance察 all this time察 not only produced him

regularly at any theatre to which we went察 but caused him to

appear in the crowd as we were coming out察 and even to get up

behind our fly!where I am sure I saw him察 two or three times察

struggling among the most dreadful spikes。 After we got home察he

haunted a post opposite our house。 The upholsterer¨s where we

lodged察 being at the corner of two streets察 and my bedroom

window being opposite the post察 I was afraid to go near the

window when I went upstairs察lest I should see him as I did one

moonlight night leaning against the post察and evidently catching

cold。 If Mr Guppy had not been察fortunately for me察engaged in the

daytime察I really should have had no rest from him。

While we were making this round of gaieties察 in which Mr

Guppy so extraordinarily participated察 the business which had

helped to bring us to town was not neglected。 Mr Kenge¨s cousin

was a Mr Bayham Badger察 who had a good practice at Chelsea察

and attended a large public Institution besides。 He was quite

willing to receive Richard into his house察 and to superintend his

studies察 and as it seemed that those could be pursued

advantageously under Mr Badger¨s roof察 and Mr Badger liked

Richard察and as Richard said he liked Mr Badger ^well enough察院

an agreement was made察 the Lord Chancellor¨s consent was

obtained察and it was all settled。

On the day when matters were concluded between Richard and

Mr Badger察we were all under engagement to dine at Mr Badger¨s

house。 We were to be ^merely a family party察院Mrs Badger¨s note

said察and we found no lady there but Mrs Badger herself。 She was

surrounded in the drawing´room by various objects察indicative of

her painting a little察playing the piano a little察playing the guitar a

little察 playing the harp a little察 singing a little察 working a little察

reading a little察writing poetry a little察and botanizing a little。 She

was a lady of about fifty察I should think察youthfully dressed察and of

a very fine complexion。 If I add to the little list of her

accomplishments察that she rouged a little察I do not mean that there

was any harm in it。

Mr Bayham Badger himself was a pink察 fresh´faced察 crisp´

looking gentleman察with a weak voice察white teeth察light hair察and

surprised eyes此 some years younger察 I should say察 than Mrs

Bayham Badger。 He admired her exceedingly察but principally察and

to begin with察 on the curious ground as it seemed to us of her

having had three husbands。 We had barely taken our seats察when

he said to Mr Jarndyce quite triumphantly察

^You would hardly suppose that I am Mrs Bayham Badger¨s

third 院

    ^Indeed拭院said Mr Jarndyce。

^Her third 院said Mr Badger。 ^Mrs Bayham Badger has not the

appearance察Miss Summerson察of a lady who has had two former

husbands拭院

I said察 Not at all 院

^And most remarkable men 院 said Mr Badger察 in a tone of

confidence。 ^Captain Swosser of the Royal Navy察 who was Mrs

Badger¨s first husband察 was a very distinguished officer indeed。

The name of Professor Dingo察my immediate predecessor察is one of

European reputation。 ̄

   Mrs Badger overheard him察and smiled。

^Yes察 my dear 院 Mr Badger replied to the smile察 I was

observing to Mr Jarndyce and Miss Summerson察that you had had

two former husbands!both very distinguished men。 And they

found it察as people generally do察difficult to believe。 ̄

^I was barely twenty察院 said Mrs Badger察 when I married

Captain Swosser of the Royal Navy。 I was in the Mediterranean

with him察 I am quite a Sailor。 On the twelfth anniversary of my

wedding´day察I became the wife of Professor Dingo。 ̄

─Of European reputation察院added Mr Badger in an undertone。

^And when Mr Badger and myself were married察院pursued Mrs

Badger察 we were married on the same day of the year。 I had

become attached to the day。 ̄

^So that Mrs Badger has been married to three husbands!two

of them highly distinguished men察院said Mr Badger察summing up

the facts此 and察 each time察 upon the twenty´first of March at

Eleven in the forenoon 院

    We all expressed our admiration。

^But for Mr Badger¨s modesty察院 said Mr Jarndyce察 I would

take leave to correct him察and say three distinguished men。 ̄

^Thank you察 Mr Jarndyce What I always tell him 院 observed

Mrs Badger。

^And察 my dear察院 said Mr Badger察 what do I always tell you拭

That without any affectation of disparaging such professional

distinction as I may have attained which our friend Mr Carstone

will have many opportunities of estimating察I am not so weak!no察

really察院said Mr Badger to us generally察 so unreasonable!as to

put my reputation on the same footing with such first´rate men as

Captain Swosser and Professor Dingo。 Perhaps you may be

interested察Mr Jarndyce察院continued Mr Bayham Badger察leading

the way into the next drawing´room察 in this portrait of Captain

Swosser。 It was taken on his return home from the African

Station察where he had suffered from the fever of the country。 Mrs

Badger considers it too yellow。 But it¨s a very fine head。 A very

fine head 院

We all echoed ^A very fine head 院

^I feel when I look at it察院 said Mr Badger察 亜that¨s a man I

should like to have seen It strikingly bespeaks the first´class man

that Captain Swosser pre´eminently was。 On the other side察

Professor Dingo。 I knew him well!attended him in his last
