But stop a minute。 Caution。 This boy must be put through a few

preliminary paces。

Name察 Jo。 Nothing else that he knows on。 Don¨t know that

everybody has two names。 Never heerd of sich a think。 Don¨t know

that Jo is short for a longer name。 Thinks it long enough for him。

He don¨t find no fault with it。 Spell it拭 No。 He can¨t spell it。 No

father察no mother察no friends。 Never been to school。 What¨s home拭

Knows a broom¨s a broom察and knows it¨s wicked to tell a lie。 Don¨t

recollect who told him about the broom察 or about the lie察 but

knows both。 Can¨t exactly say what¨ll be done to him arter he¨s

dead if he tells a lie to the gentlemen察 here察 but believes it¨ll be

something wery bad to punish him察 and serve him right!and so

he¨ll tell the truth。

^This won¨t do察 gentlemen 院 says the Coroner察 with a

melancholy shake of the head。

^Don¨t you think you can receive his evidence察 sir拭院 asks an

attentive Juryman。

^Out of the question察院 says the Coroner。 ^You have heard the

boy。 `Can¨t exactly say¨ won¨t do察you know。 We can¨t take that察in a

Court of Justice察 gentlemen。 It¨s terrible depravity。 Put the boy

aside。 ̄

Boy put aside察 to the great edification of the audience察

especially of Little Swills察the Comic Vocalist。

Now。 Is there any other witness拭No other witness。

Very well察gentlemen Here¨s a man unknown察 proved to have

been in the habit of taking opium in large quantities for a year and

a half察found dead of too much opium。 If you think you have any

evidence to lead you to the conclusion that he committed suicide察

you will come to that conclusion。 If you think it is a case of

accidental death察you will find a Verdict accordingly。

    Verdict accordingly。 Accidental death。 No doubt。 Gentlemen察

you are discharged。 Good afternoon。

While the Coroner buttons his great coat察Mr Tulkinghorn and

he give private audience to the rejected witness in a corner。

That graceless creature only knows that the dead man whom

he recognised just now by his yellow face and black hair was

sometimes hooted and pursued about the streets。 That one cold

winter night察when he察the boy察 was shivering in a doorway near

his crossing察the man turned to look at him察and came back察and察

having questioned him and found that he had not a friend in the

world察said察 Neither have I。 Not one 院and gave him the price of a

supper and a night¨s lodging。 That the man had often spoken to

him since察 and asked him whether he slept sound at night察 and

how he bore cold and hunger察and whether he ever wished to die察

and similar strange questions。 That when the man had no money察

he would say in passing察 I am as poor as you today察Jo察院but that

when he had any察he had always as the boy most heartily believes

been glad to give him some。

^He wos wery good to me察院says the boy察wiping his eyes with

his wretched sleeve。 ^Wen I see him a´layin¨ so stritched out just

As he shuffles downstairs察 Mr Snagsby察 lying in wait for him察

puts a half´crown in his hand。 ^If ever you see me coming past

your crossing with my little woman!I mean a lady! ̄ says Mr

Snagsby察with his finger on his nose察 don¨t allude to it 院

For some little time the Jurymen hang about the Sol¨s Arms

colloquially。 In the sequel察half´a´dozen are caught up in a cloud of

pipe smoke that pervades the parlour of the Sol¨s Arms察two stroll

to Hampstead察 and four engage to go half´price to the play at

night察and top up with oysters。 Little Swills is treated on several

hands。 Being asked what he thinks of the proceedings察

characterises them his strength lying in a slangular direction as

^a rummy start。 ̄ The landlord of the Sol¨s Arms察 finding Little

Swills so popular察 commends him highly to the Jurymen and

public察observing that察for a song in character察he don¨t know his

equal察and that that man¨s character´wardrobe would fill a cart。

Thus察 gradually the Sol¨s Arms melts into the shadowy night察

and then flares out of it strong in gas。 The Harmonic Meeting hour

arriving察the gentleman of professional celebrity takes the chair察is

faced red´faced by Little Swills察 their friends rally round them察

and support first´rate talent。 In the zenith of the evening察 Little

Swills says察 Gentlemen察 if you¨ll permit me察 I¨ll attempt a short

description of a scene of real life that came off here today。 Is much

applauded and encouraged察goes out of the room as Swills察comes

in as the Coroner not the least in the world like him察 describes

the Inquest察 with recreative intervals of piano´forte
