nearly all the light objects it contained。 Mrs Pardiggle took

possession of Ada察and I followed with the family。

Ada told me afterwards that Mrs Pardiggle talked in the same

loud tone that indeed I overheard察 all the way to the

brickmaker¨s察about an exciting contest which she had for two or

three years察waged against another lady察relative to the bringing in

of their rival candidates for a pension somewhere。 There had been

a quantity of printing察and promising察 and proxying察 and polling察

and it appeared to have imparted great liveliness to all concerned察

except the pensioners!who were not elected yet。

I am very fond of being confided in by children察and am happy

in being usually favoured in that respect察 but on this occasion it

gave me great uneasiness。 As soon as we were out of doors察

Egbert察with the manner of a little footpad察demanded a shilling of

me察on the ground that his pocket´money was ^boned ̄ from him。

On my pointing out the great impropriety of the word察 especially

in connection with his parent for he added sulkily ^by her 隠察he

pinched me and said ^O then Now Who are you You wouldn¨t

like it察 I think拭 What does she make a sham for察 and pretend to

give me money察 and take it away again拭 Why do you call it my

allowance察 and never let me spend it拭院 These exasperating

questions so inflamed his mind察 and the minds of Oswald and

Francis察 that they all pinched me at once察 and in a dreadfully

expert way此screwing up such little pieces of my arms that I could

hardly forbear crying out。 Felix察at the same time察stamped upon

my toes。 And the Bond of Joy察who察on account of always having

the whole of his little income anticipated察stood in fact pledged to

abstain from cakes as well as tobacco察 so swelled with grief and

rage when we passed a pastry´cook¨s shop察that he terrified me by

becoming purple。 I never underwent so much察 both in body and

mind察 in the course of a walk with young people察 as from these

unnaturally constrained children察 when they paid me the

compliment of being natural。

I was glad when we came to the brickmaker¨s house察though it

was one of a cluster of wretched hovels in a brickfield察 with

pigsties close to the broken windows察and miserable little gardens

before the doors察 growing nothing but stagnant pools。 Here and

there察an old tub was put to catch the droppings of rainwater from

a roof察or they were banked up with mud into a little pond like a

large dirt´pie。 At the doors and windows察 some men and women

lounged or prowled about察 and took little notice of us察 except to

laugh to one another察 or to say something as we passed察 about

gentle folks minding their own business察 and not troubling their

heads and muddying their shoes with coming to look after other

people¨s。

Mrs Pardiggle察 leading the way with a great show of moral

determination察and talking with much volubility about the untidy

habits of the people though I doubted if the best of us could have

been tidy in such a place察 conducted us into a cottage at the

farthest corner察 the ground´floor room of which we nearly filled。

Besides ourselves察 there were in this damp offensive room!a

woman with a black eye察nursing a poor little gasping baby by the

fire察 a man察 all stained with clay and mud察 and looking very

dissipated察 lying at full length on the ground察 smoking a pipe察 a

powerful young man察fastening a collar on a dog察and a bold girl察

doing some kind of washing in very dirty water。 They all looked up

at us as we came in察 and the woman seemed to turn her face

towards the fire察as if to hide her bruised eye察nobody gave us any

welcome察 Well察 my friends察院 said Mrs Pardiggle察 but her voice

had not a friendly sound察I thought察it was much too business´like

and systematic。 ^How do you do察all of you拭I am here again。 I told

you察you couldn¨t tire me察you know。 I am fond of hard work察and

am true to my word。 ̄

^There an¨t察院growled the man on the floor察whose head rested

on his hand as he stared at us察 any more on you to come in察 is

there拭院

^No察 my friend察院 said Mrs Pardiggle察 seating herself on one

stool察and knocking down another。 ^We are all here。 ̄

^Because I thought there warn¨t enough of you察perhaps拭院said

the man察with his pipe between his lips as he looked round upon

us。

The young man and the girl both laughed。 Two friends of the

young man whom we had attracted to the doorway察and who stood

there with their hands in their pockets察echoed the laugh noisily。

^You can¨t tire me察 good people察院 said Mrs Pardiggle to these

latter。 ^I enjoy hard work察 and the harder you make mine察 the

better I like it。 ̄

^Then make it easy for her 院growled the man upon the floor。 ^I

wants it done察and over。 I wants a end of these liberties took with

my place。 I wants an end of being drawed like a badger。 Now

instead An¨t my place dirty拭 Yes察 it is dirty!it¨s nat¨rally dirty

and it¨s nat¨rally unwholesome察 and we¨ve had five dirty察 and

unwholesome children察 as is all dead infants察 and so much the

better for them察and for us besides。 Have I read the little book wot

you left拭 No察 I an¨t read the little book wot you left。 There an¨t

anybody here as knows how to read it察and if there wos察it wouldn¨t

be suitable to me。 It¨s a book fit for a babby察and I¨m not a babby。 If

you was to leave me a doll察I shouldn¨t nuss it。 How have I been
