little orphan girl without a protector察and I take it in my head to be

that protector。 She grows up察 and more than justifies my good

opinion察and I remain her guardian and her friend。 What is there

in all this拭So察so Now察we have cleared off old scores察and I have

before me thy pleasant察trusting察trusty face again。 ̄

I said to myself察 Esther察my dear察you surprise me This really

is not what I expected of you 院and it had such a good effect察that I

folded my hands upon my basket察and quite recovered myself。 Mr

Jarndyce察expressing his approval in his face察began to talk to me

as confidentially as if I had been in the habit of conversing with

him every morning察for I don¨t know how long。 I almost felt as if I

had。

^Of course察 Esther察院 he said察 you don¨t understand this

Chancery business拭院

And of course I shook my head。

^I don¨t know who does察院 he returned。 ^The Lawyers have

twisted it into such a state of bedevilment that the original merits

of the case have long disappeared from the face of the earth。 It¨s

about a Will察 and the trusts under a Will!or it was察 once。 It¨s

about nothing but Costs察 now。 We are always appearing察 and

disappearing察 and swearing察 and interrogating察 and filing察 and

cross´filing察 and arguing察 and sealing察 and motioning察 and

referring察and reporting察and revolving about the Lord Chancellor

and all his satellites察and equitably waltzing ourselves off to dusty

death察about Costs。 That¨s the great question。 All the rest察by some

extraordinary means察has melted away。 ̄

^But it was察sir察院said I察to bring him back察for he began to rub

his head察 about a Will拭院

^Why察yes察it was about a Will when it was about anything察院he

returned。 ^A certain Jarndyce察 in an evil hour察 made a great

fortune察 and made a great Will。 In the question how the trusts

under that Will are to be administered察the fortune left by the Will

is squandered away察 the legatees under the Will are reduced to

such a miserable condition that they would be sufficiently

punished察 if they had committed an enormous crime in having

money left them察 and the Will itself is made a dead letter。 All

through the deplorable cause察 everything that everybody in it察

except one man察knows already察is referred to that only one man

who don¨t know it察to find out!all through the deplorable cause察

everybody must have copies察 over and over again察 of everything

that has accumulated about it in the way of cartloads of papers or

must pay for them without having them察which is the usual course察

for nobody wants them察 and must go down the middle and up

again察 through such an infernal country´dance of costs and fees

and nonsense and corruption察 as was never dreamed of in the

wildest visions of a Witch¨s Sabbath。 Equity sends questions to

Law察 Law sends questions back to Equity察 Law finds it can¨t do

this察 Equity finds it can¨t do that察 neither can so much as say it

can¨t do anything察 without this solicitor instructing and this

like the history of the Apple Pie。 And thus察 through years and

years察 and lives and lives察 everything goes on察 constantly

beginning over and over again察 and nothing ever ends。 And we

can¨t get out of the suit on any terms察for we are made parties to it察

and must be parties to it察whether we like it or not。 But it won¨t do

to think of it When my great Uncle察poor Tom Jarndyce察began to

think of it察it was the beginning of the end 院

^The Mr Jarndyce察sir察whose story I have heard拭院

He nodded gravely。 ^I was his heir察 and this was his house察

Esther。 When I came here察 it was bleak察 indeed。 He had left the

signs of his misery upon it。 ̄

^How changed it must be now 院I said。

^It had been called察 before his time察 the Peaks。 He gave it its

present name察and lived here shut up此day and night poring over

the wicked heaps of papers in the suit察and hoping against hope to

                                  Bleak House 138

disentangle it from its mystification and bring it to a close。 In the

meantime察 the place became dilapidated察 the wind whistled

through the cracked walls察 the rain fell through the broken roof察

the weeds choked the passage to the rotting door。 When I brought

what remained of him home here察the brains seemed to me to have

been blown out of the house too察it was so shattered and ruined。

He walked a little to and fro察after saying this to himself with a

shudder察and then looked at me察and brightened察and came and sat

down again with his hands in his pockets。

^I told you this was the Growlery察my dear。 Where was I拭院

I reminded him察at the hopeful change he had made in Bleak

House。

^Bleak House此true。 There is in that city of London there察some

property of ours察which is much at this day what Bleak House was

then察I say property of ours察meaning of the Suit¨s察but I ought to

call it the property of Costs察for Costs is the only power on earth

that will ever get anything out of it now察 or will ever know it for

anything but an eyesore and a heartsore。 It is a street of perishing

blind houses察with their eyes stoned out察without a pane of glass察

without so much as a window´frame察with the bare blank shutters

tumbling from their hinges and falling asunder察 the iron rails

peeling away in flakes of rust察the chimneys sinking in察the stone

steps to every door and every door might be Death¨s Door

turning stagnant green察the very crutches on which the ruins are

propped察 decaying。 Although Bleak House was not in Chancery察

its master was察and it was stamped with the same seal。 These are

the Great Seal¨s impressions察 my dear察 all over England!the

children know them 院

^How changed it is 院I said again。

^Why察 so it is察院 he answered much more cheerfully察 and it is

wisdom in you to keep me to the bright side of the picture。 ̄ The

idea of my wisdom。 ^These are things I never talk about察or even

think about察 excepting in the Growlery察 here。 If you consider it

right to mention them to Rick and Ada察院looking seriously at me察

^you can。 I leave it to your discretion察Est
