¨and tell me what is the true legitimacy察when you shall have quite

made up your mind on that subject。¨ Why察honour to her old Welsh

blood察my dear 院cried my Guardian察 with enthusiasm察 I believe

the heart it animates beats no less warmly察no less admiringly察no

less lovingly察towards Dame Durden察than my own 院

He tenderly raised my head察and as I clung to him察kissed me in

his old fatherly way again and again。 What a light察 now察 on the

protecting manner I had thought about。

^One more last word。 When Allan Woodcourt spoke to you察my

dear察 he spoke with my knowledge and consent!but I gave him

no encouragement察 not I察 for these surprises were my great

reward察and I was too miserly to part with a scrap of it。 He was to

come察and tell me all that passed察 and he did。 I have no more to

say。 My dearest察Allan Woodcourt stood beside your father when

he lay dead!stood beside your mother。 This is Bleak House。 This

day I give this house its little mistress察 and before God察 it is the

brightest day in all my life 院

He rose and raised me with him。 We were no longer alone。 My

husband!I have called him by that name full seven happy years

now!stood at my side。

^Allan察院 said my Guardian察 take from me察 a willing gift察 the

best wife that ever a man had。 What more can I say for you than

that I know you deserve her Take with her the little home she

and what do I sacrifice拭Nothing察nothing。 ̄

He kissed me once again察and now the tears were in his eyes察as

he said more softly此

^Esther察 my dearest察 after so many years察 there is a kind of

parting in this too。 I know that my mistake has caused you some

place in your affections察and blot it out of your memory。 Allan察take

in the sunlight outside察and turning cheerfully towards us察said此

month was out察but when we were to come and take possession of

our own house察was to depend on Richard and Ada。

We all three went home together next day。 As soon as we

arrived in town察 Allan went straight to see Richard察and to carry

our joyful news to him and my darling。 Late as it was察I meant to

go to her for a few minutes before lying down to sleep察but I went

home with my Guardian first察 to make his tea for him察 and to

occupy the old chair by his side察 for I did not like to think of its

being empty so soon。

When we came home察 we found that a young man had called

three times in the course of that one day察 to see me察 and that察

having been told察on the occasion of his third call察than I was not

expected to return before ten o¨clock at night察 he had left word察

^that he would call about then。 ̄ He had left his card three times。

MR GUPPY。

As I naturally speculated on the object of these visits察and as I

always associated something ludicrous with the visitor察 it fell out

that in laughing about Mr Guppy I told my Guardian of his old

proposal察 and his subsequent retraction。 ^After that察院 said my

Guardian察 we will certainly receive this hero。 ̄ So察 instructions

were given that Mr Guppy should be shown in察 when he came

again察and they were scarcely given when he did come again。

He was embarrassed when he found my Guardian with me察but

recovered himself察and said察 How de do察sir拭院

^How do you do察sir拭院returned my Guardian。

^Thank you察sir察I am tolerable察院returned Mr Guppy。 ^Will you

allow me to introduce my mother察 Mrs Guppy of the Old Street

Road察 and my particular friend察 Mr Weevle。 That is to say察 my

My Guardian begged them to be seated察and they all sat down。

^Tony察院said Mr Guppy to his friend察after an awkward silence。

^Will you open the case拭院

^Do it yourself察院returned the friend察rather tartly。

^Well察 Mr Jarndyce察 sir察院 Mr Guppy察 after a moment¨s

consideration察began察to the great diversion of his mother察 which

she displayed by nudging Mr Jobling with her elbow察and winking

at me in a most remarkable manner察 I had an idea that I should

see Miss Summerson by herself察 and was not quite prepared for

your esteemed presence。 But Miss Summerson has mentioned to

you察 perhaps察 that something has passed between us on former

occasions拭院

^Miss Summerson察院returned my Guardian smiling察 has made

a communication to that effect to me。 ̄

^That察院said Mr Guppy察 makes matters easier。 Sir察I have come

out of my articles at Kenge and Carboy¨s察 and I believe with

satisfaction to all parties。 I am now admitted after undergoing an

examination that¨s enough to badger a man blue察touching a pack

of nonsense that he don¨t want to know on the roll of attorneys察

and have taken out my certificate察if it would be any satisfaction to

you to see it。 ̄

^Thank you察 Mr Guppy察院 returned my Guardian。 ^I am quite

willing!I believe I use a legal phrase!to admit the certificate。 ̄

Mr Guppy therefore desisted from taking something out of his

pocket察and proceeded without it。

^I have no capital myself察 but my mother has a little property

which takes the form of an annuity察院 here Mr Guppy¨s mother

    ^Certainly an advantage察院returned my Guardian。
