brotherly察as I said before察and I thank you heartily for it察院shaking

him a long time by the hand。 ^But the truth is察brother察I am a!I

am a kind of a Weed察 and it¨s too late to plant me in a regular

garden。 ̄

^My dear George察院 returns the elder察 concentrating his strong

steady brow upon him察and smiling confidently察 leave that to me察

and let me try。 ̄

George shakes his head。 ^You could do it察I have not a doubt察if

anybody could察 but it¨s not to be done。 Not to be done察 sir

Whereas it so falls out察on the other hand察that I am able to be of

some trifle of use to Sir Leicester Dedlock since his illness!

brought on by family sorrows察and that he would rather have that

help from our mother¨s son than from anybody else。 ̄

^Well察 my dear George察院 returns the other察 with a very slight

shade upon his open face察 if you prefer to serve in Sir Leicester

Dedlock¨s household brigade! ̄

^There it is察brother 院cries the trooper察checking him察with his

hand upon his knee again此 there it is。 You don¨t take kindly to

that idea察I don¨t mind it。 You are not used to being officered察I am。

Everything about you is in perfect order and discipline察everything

about me requires to be kept so。 We are not accustomed to carry

things with the same hand察or to look at ¨em from the same point。 I

don¨t say much about my garrison manners察 because I found

myself pretty well at my ease last night察 and they wouldn¨t be

noticed here察I dare say察once and away。 But I shall get on best at

Chesney Wold!where there¨s more room for a Weed than there is

here察and the dear old lady will be made happy besides。 Therefore

I accept of Sir Leicester Dedlock¨s proposals。 When I come over

next year to give away the bride察or whenever I come察I shall have

the sense to keep the household brigade in ambuscade察and not to

manoeuvre it on your ground。 I thank you heartily again察and am

proud to think of the Rouncewells as they¨ll be founded by you。 ̄

^You know yourself察George察院says the elder brother察returning

the grip of his hand察 and perhaps you know me better than I

know myself。 Take your way。 So that we don¨t quite lose one

another again察take your way。 ̄

^No fear of that 院returns the trooper。 ^Now察before I turn my

horse¨s head homewards察 brother察 I will ask you!if you¨ll be so

good!to look over a letter for me。 I brought it with me to send

from these parts察 as Chesney Wold might be a painful name just

now to the person it¨s written to。 I am not much accustomed to

correspondence myself察 and I am particular respecting this

present letter察 because I want it to be both straightforward and

delicate。 ̄

Herewith he hands a letter察 closely written in somewhat pale

ink but in a neat round hand察 to the ironmaster察 who reads as

follows此

^Miss Esther Summerson察

^A communication having been made to me by Inspector

Bucket of a letter to myself being found among the papers of a

certain person察I take the liberty to make known to you that it was

but a few lines of instruction from abroad察when察where察and how

to deliver an enclosed letter to a young and beautiful lady察 then

unmarried in England。 I duly observed the same。

^I further take the liberty to make known to you察that it was got

from me as a proof of hand´writing only察 and that otherwise I

would not have given it up as appearing to be the most harmless in

my possession察without being previously shot through the heart。

^I further take the liberty to mention察 that if I could have

supposed a certain unfortunate gentleman to have been in

existence察I never could and never would have rested until I had

discovered his retreat察and shared my last farthing with him察as my

duty and my inclination would have equally been。 But he was

officially reported drowned察and assuredly went over the side of a

transport´ship at night in an Irish harbour察within a few hours of

her arrival from the West Indies察as I have myself heard both from

officers and men on board察 and know to have been officially

confirmed。

^I further take the liberty to state that in my humble quality as

one of the rank and file察I am察and shall ever continue to be察your

thoroughly devoted and admiring servant察 and that I esteem the

qualities you possess above all others察far beyond the limits of the

present dispatch。

^I have the honour to be察

                                                                   ^GEORGE。 ̄

^A little formal察院observes the elder brother察refolding it with a

puzzled face。

^But nothing that might not be sent to a pattern young lady拭院

asks the younger。

    ^Nothing at all。 ̄

Therefore it is sealed察and deposited for posting among the iron

correspondence of the day。 This done察 Mr George takes a hearty

farewell of the family party察 and prepares to saddle and mount。

His brother察however察unwilling to part with him so soon察proposes

to ride with him in a light open carriage to the place where he will

bait for the night察 and there remain with him until morning此 a

servant riding察for so much of the journey察 on the thorough´bred

old grey from Chesney Wold。 The offer being gladly accepted察 is

followed by a pleasant ride察 a pleasant dinner察 and a pleasant

breakfast察all in brotherly communion。 Then they once more shake

hands long and heartily察and part察the ironmaster turning his face

to the smoke and fires察and the trooper to the green country。 Early

in the afternoon察 the subdued sound of his heavy military trot is

heard on the turf in in the avenue察as he rides on with imaginary

clank and jingle of accoutrements under the old elm trees。

                           Esther¨s Narrative

oon after I had had that conversation with my Guardian察he

put a sealed paper in my hand one morning察 and said察

 S

^This is for next month察 my dear。 ̄ I found in it two

hundred pounds。

I now began very quietly to make such preparations as I

thought were necessary。 Regulating my purchases by my

Guardian¨s taste察which I knew very well of course察I arranged my
