sitting with him since ten o¨clock last night。 ̄

^O dear me察he is ill 院

^No察 no察 believe me察 not ill察 but not quite well。 He was

depressed and faint!you know he gets so worried and so worn

sometimes!and Ada sent to me of course察and when I came home

I found her note察and came straight here。 Well Richard revived so

much after a little while察and Ada was so happy察and so convinced

of its being my doing察though God knows I had little enough to do

with it察 that I remained with him until he had been fast asleep

some hours。 As fast asleep as she is now察I hope 院

His friendly and familiar way of speaking of them察 his

unaffected devotion to them察the grateful confidence with which I

knew he inspired my darling察and the comfort he was to her察could

I separate all this from his promise to me拭How thankless I must

have been if it had not recalled the words he said to me察when he

was so moved by the change in my appearance察 I will accept him

as a trust察and it shall be a sacred one 院

We now turned into another narrow street。 ^Mr Woodcourt察院

said Mr Bucket察who had eyed him closely as we came along察 our

business takes us to a law´stationer¨s here察a certain Mr Snagsby¨s。

What察you know him察do you拭院He was so quick that he saw it in

an instant。

^Yes察 I know a little of him察 and have called upon him at this

place。 ̄

^Indeed察sir拭院said Mr Bucket。 ^Then will you be so good as to

let me leave Miss Summerson with you for a moment察while I go

and have half a word with him拭院

The last police officer with whom he had conferred was

standing silently behind us。 I was not aware of it until he struck in察

on my saying I heard some one crying。

    ^Don¨t be alarmed察miss察院he returned。 ^It¨s Snagsby¨s servant。 ̄

^Why察you see察院said Mr Bucket察 the girl¨s subject to fits察and

has ¨em bad upon her tonight。 A most contrary circumstance it is察

for I want certain information out of that girl察 and she must be

brought to reason somehow。 ̄

^At all events察they wouldn¨t be up yet察if it wasn¨t for her察Mr

Bucket察院said the other man。 ^She¨s been at it pretty well all night察

sir。 ̄

    ^Well察 that¨s true察院 he returned。 ^My light¨s burnt out。 Show

yours a moment。 ̄

All this passed in a whisper察 a door or two from the house in

which I could faintly hear crying and moaning。 In the little round

of light produced for the purpose察Mr Bucket went up to the door

and knocked。 The door was opened察 after he had knocked twice察

and he went in察leaving us standing in the street。

^Miss Summerson察院said Mr Woodcourt察 if察without obtruding

myself on your confidence察I may remain near you察pray let me do

so。 ̄

^You are truly kind察院I answered。 ^I need wish to keep no secret

of my own from you察if I keep any it is another¨s。 ̄

^I quite understand。 Trust me察 I will remain near you only so

long as I can fully respect it。 ̄

^I trust implicitly to you察院I said。 ^I know and deeply feel how

sacredly you keep your promise。 ̄

After a short time the little round of light shone out again察and

Mr Bucket advanced towards us in it with his earnest face。 ^Please

to come in察Miss Summerson察院he said察 and sit down by the fire。

Mr Woodcourt察from information I have received I understand you

are a medical man。 Would you look to this girl and see if anything

can be done to bring her round。 She has a letter somewhere that I

particularly want。 It¨s not in her box察and I think it must be about

her察but she is so twisted and clenched up察that she is difficult to

handle without hurting。 ̄

We all three went into the house together察although it was cold

and raw察it smelt close too from being up all night。 In the passage察

behind the door察stood a scared察sorrowful´looking little man in a

grey coat察 who seemed to have a naturally polite manner察 and

spoke meekly。

^Downstairs if you please察Mr Bucket察院said he。 ^The lady will

excuse the front kitchen察we use it as our workaday sitting´room。

The back is Guster¨s bedroom察and in it she¨s a´carrying on察poor

thing察to a frightful extent 院

We went downstairs察followed by Mr Snagsby察as I soon found

the little man to be。 In the front kitchen察 sitting by the fire察 was

Mrs Snagsby察with very red eyes and a very severe expression of

face。

^My little woman察院 said Mr Snagsby察 entering behind us察 to

wave!not to put too fine a point upon it察my dear!hostilities察for

one single moment察in the course of this prolonged night察here is

Inspector Bucket察Mr Woodcourt and a lady。 ̄

She looked very much astonished察as she had reason for doing察

and looked particularly hard at me。

^My little woman察院 said Mr Snagsby察 sitting down in the

remotest corner by the door察 as if he were taking a liberty察 it is

not unlikely that you may inquire of me why Inspector Bucket察Mr

Woodcourt察 and a lady察 call upon us in Cook¨s Court察 Cursitor

Street察at the present hour。 I don¨t know。 I have not the least idea。

If I was to be informed察I should despair of understanding察and I¨d

rather not be told。 ̄

He appeared so miserable察sitting with his head upon his hand察

and I appeared so unwelcome察that I was going to offer an apology察

when Mr Bucket took the matter on himself。

^Now察Mr Snagsby察院said he察 the best thing you can do察is to go

along with Mr Woodcourt to look after your Guster! ̄

    ^My Guster察Mr Bucket 院cried Mr Snagsby。 ^Go on察sir察go on。

I shall be charged with that next。 ̄

^And to hold the candle察院 pursued Mr Bucket without

correcting himself察 or hold her察 or make yourself useful in any

way you¨re asked。 Which there¨s not a man alive more ready to do察

for you¨re a man of urbanity and suavity察you know察and you¨ve got

the sort of heart that can feel for another。 Mr Woodcourt察would

you be so good as to see to her察and if you can get that letter from

her察to let me have it as soon as ever you can殖 ̄ As they went out察

Mr Bucket made me sit down in a corner by the fire察and take off

my wet shoes察which he turned up to dry upon the fender察talking

all the time。

^Don¨t you be at all put out察miss察by the want of a hospitable

look from Mrs Snagsby there察 because she¨s under a mistake

altogether。 She¨ll find that out察sooner than will be agreeable to a

lady of her generally correct manner of forming her thoughts察
