Toughey察and I found him。 ̄
I regarded this as very treacherous on the part of Mr Skimpole察
towards my Guardian察 and as passing the usual bounds of his
childish innocence。
^Bounds察my dear拭院returned Mr Bucket。 ^Bounds拭Now察Miss
Summerson察I¨ll give you a piece of advice that your husband will
find useful when you are happily married and have got a family
about you。 Whenever a person says to you that they are as
innocent as can be in all concerning money察look well after your
own money察 for they are dead certain to collar it察 if they can。
Whenever a person proclaims to you `In worldly matters I¨m a
child察 you consider that that person is only a´crying off from being
held accountable察and that you have got that person¨s number察and
it¨s Number One。 Now察I am not a poetical man myself察except in a

vocal way when it goes round a company察but I¨m a practical one察
and that¨s my experience。 So¨s this rule。 Fast and loose in one
thing。 Fast and loose in everything。 I never knew it fail。 No more
will you。 Nor no one。 With which caution to the unwary察my dear察I
take the liberty of pulling this here bell察 and so go back to our
business。 ̄
I believe it had not been for a moment out of his mind察 any
more than it had been out of my mind察 or out of his face。 The
whole household were amazed to see me察 without any notice察 at
that time in the morning察and so accompanied察and their surprise
was not diminished by my inquiries。 No one察 however察 had been
there。 It could not be doubted that this was the truth。
^Then察Miss Summerson察院said my companion察 we can¨t be too
soon at the cottage where those brickmakers are to be found。 Most
inquiries there I leave to you察if you will be so good as to make ¨em。
The naturalest way is the best way察and the naturalest way is your
own way。 ̄
We set off again immediately。 On arriving at the cottage察 we
found it shut up察 and apparently deserted察 but one of the
neighbours who knew me察and who came out when I was trying to
make some one hear察informed me that the two women and their
husbands now lived together in another house察 made of loose
rough bricks察 which stood on the margin of the piece of ground
where the kilns were察 and where the long rows of bricks were
drying。 We lost no time in repairing to this place察which was within
a few hundred yards察and as the door stood ajar察I pushed it open。
There were only three of them sitting at breakfast察 the child
lying asleep on a bed in the corner。 It was Jenny察the mother of the
dead child察who was absent。 The other woman rose on seeing me察

and the men察 though they were察 as usual察 sulky and silent察 each
gave me a morose nod of recognition。 A look passed between them
when Mr Bucket followed me in察and I was surprised to see that
the woman evidently knew him。
I had asked leave to enter of course。 Liz the only name by
which I knew her rose to give me her own chair察but I sat down on
a stool near the fire察and Mr Bucket took a corner of the bedstead。
Now that I had to speak察and was among people with whom I was
not familiar察I became conscious of being hurried and giddy。 It was
very difficult to begin察and I could not help bursting into tears。
^Liz察院said I察 I have come a long way in the night and through
the snow察to inquire after a lady! ̄
^Who has been here you know察院 Mr Bucket struck in察
addressing the whole group察 with a composed propitiatory face察
^that¨s the lady the young lady means。 The lady that was here last
night察you know。 ̄
^And who told you as there was anybody here拭院 inquired
Jenny¨s husband察 who had made a surly stop in his eating察 to
listen察and now measured him with his eye。
^A person of the name of Michael Jackson察in a blue welveteen
waistcoat with a double row of mother of pearl buttons察院 Mr
Bucket immediately answered。
^He had as good mind his own business察 whoever he is察院
growled the man。
^He¨s out of employment I believe察院 said Mr Bucket察
apologetically for Michael Jackson察 and so gets talking。 ̄
The woman had not resumed her chair察but stood faltering with
her hand upon its broken back察looking at me。 I thought she would
have spoken to me privately察if she had dared。 She was still in this

attitude of uncertainty察when her husband察who was eating with a
lump of bread and fat in one hand察and his clasp´knife in the other察
struck the handle of his knife violently on the table察and told her
with an oath to mind her business at any rate察and sit down。
^I should like to have seen Jenny very much察院said I察 for I am
sure she would have told me all she could about this lady察whom I
am very anxious indeed!you cannot think how anxious!to
overtake。 Will Jenny be here soon拭Where is she拭院
The woman had a great desire to answer察 but the man察 with
another oath察openly kicked at her foot with his heavy boot。 He left
it to Jenny¨s husband to say what he chose察 and after a dogged
silence the latter turned his shaggy head towards me。
^I¨m not partial to gentlefolks coming into my place察as you¨ve
heerd me say afore now察I think察miss。 I let their places be察and it¨s
curous they can¨t let my place be。 There¨d be a pretty shine made
if I was to go a´wisiting them察I think。 Howsoever察I don¨t so much
complain of you as of some others察and I¨m agreeable to make you
a civil answer察 though I give notice that I¨m not a going to be
drawed like a badger。 Will Jenny be here soon拭 No she won¨t。
Where is she拭She¨s gone up to Lunnun。 ̄
^Did she go last night拭院I asked。
^Did she go last night拭Ah she went last night察院he answered察
with a sulky jerk of his head。
^But was she here when the lady came拭And what did the lady
say to her拭And where is the lady gone拭I beg and pray you to be
so kind as to tell me察院said I察 for I am in great distress to know。 ̄
^If my master would let me speak察 and not say a word of
harm! ̄ the womanly timidly began。
^Your master察院 said her husband察 muttering an imprecation

with slow emphasis察 will break your neck察if you meddle with wot
don¨t concern you。 ̄
After another silence察 the husband of the absent woman察
turning to me again察 answered me with
