Sir Leicester rises from his chair察and staggers down again。

^And she got encouragement in it from hearing that I was

always here察which was done a¨ purpose。 Now察 open that pocket´

book of mine察 Sir Leicester Dedlock察 if I may take the liberty of

throwing it towards you察 and look at the letter sent to me察 each

with the two words察 LADY DEDLOCK察 in it。 Open the one

directed to yourself察which I stopped this very morning察and read

the three words察 LADY DEDLOCK察 MURDERESS察 in it。 These

letters have been falling about like a shower of lady´birds。 What do

you say now to Mrs Bucket察from her spy´place察having seen them

all written by this young woman拭What do you say to Mrs Bucket

having察 within this half´hour察 secured the corresponding ink and

paper察fellow half´sheets察and what not拭 What do you say to Mrs

Bucket having watched the posting of ¨em every one by this young

woman察 Sir Leicester Dedlock察 Baronet拭院 Mr Bucket asks察

triumphant in his admiration of his lady¨s genius。

Two things are especially observable察as Mr Bucket proceeds to

a conclusion。 First察 that he seems imperceptibly to establish a

dreadful right of property in Mademoiselle。 Secondly察 that the

very atmosphere she breathes seems to narrow and contract about

her察as if a close net察or a pall察 were being drawn nearer and yet

nearer around her breathless figure。

^There¨s no doubt that her Ladyship was on the spot at the

eventful period察院says Mr Bucket察 and my foreign friend here saw

her察I believe from the upper part of the staircase。 Her Ladyship

and George and my foreign friend were all pretty close on one

another¨s heels。 But that don¨t signify any more察so I¨ll not go into

it。 I found the wadding of the pistol with which the deceased Mr

Tulkinghorn was shot。 It was a bit of the printed description of

your house at Chesney Wold。 Not much in that察 you¨ll say察 Sir

Leicester Dedlock察Baronet。 No。 But when my foreign friend here

is so thoroughly off her guard as to think it a safe time to tear up

the rest of that leaf察and when Mrs Bucket puts the pieces together

and finds the wadding wanting察 it begins to look like Queer

street。 ̄

^These are very long lies察院 Mademoiselle interposes。 ^You

prose great deal。 Is it that you have almost all finished察or are you

speaking always拭院

^Sir Leicester Dedlock察 Baronet察院 proceeds Mr Bucket察 who

delights in a full title察 and does violence to himself when he

dispenses with any fragment of it察 the last point in the case which

I am now going to mention察shows the necessity of patience in our

business察and never doing a thing in a hurry。 I watched this young

woman yesterday察without her knowledge察when she was looking

at the funeral察in company with my wife察who planned to take her

there察 and I had so much to convict her察 and I saw such an

expression in her face察 and my mind so rose against her malice

towards her Ladyship察and the time was altogether such a time for

bringing down what you may call retribution upon her察 that if I

had been a younger hand with less experience察 I should have

taken her察certain。 Equally察last night察when her Ladyship察as is so

universally admired I am sure察come home察looking!why察Lord a

man might almost say like Venus rising from the ocean察it was so

unpleasant and inconsistent to think of her being charged with a

murder of which she was innocent察that I felt quite to want to put

an end to the job。 What should I have lost拭Sir Leicester Dedlock察

Baronet察 I should have lost the weapon。 My prisoner here

proposed to Mrs Bucket察 after the departure of the funeral察 that

they should go察per buss察 a little ways into the country察 and take

tea at a very decent house of entertainment。 Now察near that house

of entertainment there¨s a piece of water。 At tea察my prisoner got

up to fetch her pocket´handkerchef from the bedroom where the

bonnets was察 she was rather a long time gone察 and came back a

little out of wind。 As soon as they came home this was reported to

me by Mrs Bucket察along with her observations and suspicious。 I

had the piece of water dragged by moonlight察 in presence of a

couple of our men察and the pocket´pistol was brought up before it

had been there half´a´dozen hours。 Now察my dear察put your arm a

little further through mine察and hold it steady察 and I sha¨n¨t hurt

you 院

In a trice Mr Bucket snaps a handcuff on her wrist。 ^That¨s

one察院says Mr Bucket。 ^Now the other察darling。 Two察and all told 院

He rises察 she rises too。 ^Where察院 she asks him察 darkening her

large eyes until their drooping lids almost conceal them!and yet

they stare察 where is your false察 your treacherous and cursed

wife拭院

^She¨s gone forrard to the Police Office察院 returns Mr Bucket。

^You¨ll see her there察my dear。 ̄

^I would like to kiss her拭院 exclaims Mademoiselle Hortense察

panting tigress´like。

^You¨d bite her察I suspect察院says Mr Bucket。

^I would 院making her eyes very large。 ^I would love to tear her察

limb from limb。 ̄

^Bless you察 darling察院 says Mr Bucket察 with the greatest

composure察 I¨m fully prepared to hear that。 Your sex have such a

surprising animosity against one another察when you do differ。 You

don¨t mind me half so much察do you拭院

    ^No。 Though you are a Devil still。 ̄

^Angel and devil by turns察eh拭院cries Mr Bucket。 ^But I am in

my regular employment察 you must consider。 Let me put your

shawl tidy。 I¨ve been lady¨s maid to a good many before now。

Anything wanting to the bonnet拭There¨s a cab at the door。 ̄

Mademoiselle Hortense察 casting an indignant eye at the glass察

shakes herself perfectly neat in one shake察 and looks察 to do her

justice察uncommonly genteel。

^Listen then察my angel察院says she察after several sarcastic nods。

^You are very spiritual。 But can you restore him back to life拭院

Mr Bucket answers察 Not exactly。 ̄

^That is droll。 Listen yet one time。 You are very spiritual。 Can

you make a honourable lady of Her拭院

^Don¨t be so malicious察院says Mr Bucket。

^Or a haughty gentleman of Him拭院 cries Mademoiselle察

referring to Sir Leicester with ineffable disdain。 ^Eh O then

regard him The poor infant Ha ha ha 院

^Come察come察why this is worse Parlaying than the other察院says

Mr Bucket。 ^Come along 院

^You cannot do these things拭 Then you can do as you
