found him in his barrack´room but a little while before察except that
he was not writing察but was sitting with a book before him察 from
which his eyes and thoughts were far astray。 As the door chanced
to be standing open察Mr Woodcourt was in his presence for some
moments without being perceived察and he told me that he never
could forget the haggardness of his face察and the dejection of his
manner察before he was aroused from his dream。
^Woodcourt察 my dear fellow 院 cried Richard察 starting up with
extended hands察 you come upon my vision like a ghost。 ̄
^A friendly one察院 he replied察 and only waiting察 as they say
ghosts do察to be addressed。 How does the mortal world go拭院They
were seated now察near together。
^Badly enough察and slowly enough察院said Richard察 speaking at
least for my part of it。 ̄
^What part is that拭院
^The Chancery part。 ̄
^I never heard察院returned Mr Woodcourt察shaking his head察 of
its going well yet。 ̄
^Nor I察院said Richard察moodily。 ^Who ever did拭院
He brightened again in a moment察 and said察 with his natural
openness此
^Woodcourt察 I should be sorry to be misunderstood by you察
even if I gained by it in your estimation。 You must know that I
have done no good this long time。 I have not intended to do much
harm察but I seem to have been capable of nothing else。 It may be
that I should have done better by keeping out of the net into which
my destiny has worked me察but I think not察though I dare say you
will soon hear察 if you have not already heard察 a very different
opinion。 To make short of a long story察I am afraid I have wanted

an object察but I have an object now!or it has me!and it is too late
to discuss it。 Take me as I am察and make the best of me。 ̄
^A bargain察院 said Mr Woodcourt。 ^Do as much by me in
return。 ̄
^Oh You察院returned Richard察 you can pursue your art for its
own sake察 and can put your hand upon the plough察 and never
turn察and can strike a purpose out of anything。 You察and I察are very
different creatures。 ̄
He spoke regretfully察and lapsed for a moment into his weary
condition。
^Well察 well 院 he cried察 shaking it off察 everything has an end。
We shall see So you will take me as I am察 and make the best of
me拭院
^Ay indeed I will。 ̄ They shook hands upon it laughingly察but in
deep earnestness。 I can answer察for one of them察with my heart of
hearts。
^You come as a godsend察院 said Richard察 for I have seen
nobody here yet but Vholes。 Woodcourt察 there is one subject I
should like to mention察for once and for all察in the beginning of our
treaty。 You can hardly make the best of me if I don¨t。 You know察I
dare say察that I have an attachment to my cousin Ada拭院
Mr Woodcourt replied that I had hinted as much to him。
^Now pray察院 returned Richard察 don¨t think me a heap of
selfishness。 Don¨t suppose that I am splitting my head and half
breaking my heart over this miserable Chancery suit察for my own
rights and interests alone。 Ada¨s are bound up with mine察 they
can¨t be separated察Vholes works for both of us。 Do think of that 院
He was so very solicitous on this head察that Mr Woodcourt gave
him the strongest assurances that he did him no injustice。

^You see察院said Richard察with something pathetic in his manner
of lingering on the point察though it was offhand and unstudied察 to
an upright fellow like you察bringing a friendly face like yours here察
I cannot bear the thought of appearing selfish and mean。 I want to
see Ada righted察 Woodcourt察 as well as myself察 I want to do my
utmost to right her察as well as myself察I venture what I can scrape
together to extricate her察 as well as myself。 Do察 I beseech you察
think of that 院
Afterwards察 when Mr Woodcourt came to reflect on what had
passed察 he was so very much impressed by the strength of
Richard¨s anxiety on this point察that in telling me generally of his
first visit to Symond¨s Inn察he particularly dwelt upon it。 It revived
a fear I had had before察that my dear girl¨s little property would be
absorbed by Mr Vholes察and that Richard¨s justification to himself
would be sincerely this。 It was just as I began to take care of
Caddy察that the interview took place察and I now return to the time
when Caddy had recovered察and the shade was still between me
and my darling。
I proposed to Ada察 that morning察 that we should go and see
Richard。 It a little surprised me to find that she hesitated察and was
not so radiantly willing as I had expected。
^My dear察院 said I察 you have not had any difference with
Richard since I have been so much away拭院
^No察Esther。 ̄
^Not heard of him perhaps拭院said I。
^Yes察I have heard of him察院said Ada。
Such tears in her eyes察 and such love in her face。 I could not
make my darling out。 Should I go to Richard¨s by myself察I said拭
No察Ada thought I had better not go by myself。 Would she go with

me拭 Yes察 Ada thought she had better go with me。 Should we go
now拭Yes察let us go now。 Well察I could not understand my darling察
with the tears in her eyes and the love in her face
We were soon equipped察 and went out。 It was a sombre day察
and drops of chill rain fell at intervals。 It was one of those
colourless days when everything looks heavy and harsh。 The
houses frowned at us察the dust rose at us察 the smoke swooped at
us察nothing made any compromise about itself察or wore a softened
aspect。 I fancied my beautiful girl quite out of place in the rugged
streets察and I thought there were more funerals passing along the
dismal pavements察than I had ever seen before。
We had first to find out Symond¨s Inn。 We were going to inquire
in a shop察when Ada said she thought it was near Chancery Lane。
^We are not likely to be far out察my love察if we go in that direction察院
said I。 So to Chancery Lane we went察and there察sure enough察we
saw it written up。 Symond¨s Inn。
We had next to find out the number。 ^Or Mr Vholes¨s office will
do察院 I recollected察 for Mr Vholes¨s office is next door。 ̄ Upon
which Ada said察perhaps that was Mr Vholes¨s office in the corner
there。 And it really was。
Then came the question察which of the two next doors拭I was for
going to the one察and my darling was for going to the other察 and
my darling was right again。 So察 up we went to the second story察
where we came to Richard¨s name in great white letters on a
hearse´like p
