rung as we drew up察and amidst the sound of its deep voice in the

still air察and the distant barking of some dogs察and a gush of light

from the open door察and the smoking and steaming of the heated

horses察and the quickening beating of our own hearts察we alighted

in no inconsiderable confusion。

^Ada察 my love察 Esther察 my dear察 you are welcome。 I rejoice to

see you Rick察if I had a hand to spare at present察I would give it

you 院

The gentleman who said these words in a clear察 bright察

hospitable voice察had one of his arms round Ada¨s waist察and the

other round mine察and kissed us both in a fatherly way察and bore

us across the hall into a ruddy little room察 all in a glow with a

blazing fire。 Here he kissed us again察and opening his arms察made

us sit down side by side察 on a sofa ready drawn out near the

hearth。 I felt that if we had been at all demonstrative察 he would

have run away in a moment。

    ^Now察 Rick 院 said he察 I have a hand at liberty。 A word in

earnest is as good as a speech。 I am heartily glad to see you。 You

are at home。 Warm yourself 院

Richard shook him by both hands with an intuitive mixture of

respect and frankness察 and only saying though with an

earnestness that rather alarmed me察 I was so afraid of Mr

Jarndyce¨s suddenly disappearing察 You are very kind察 sir We

are very much obliged to you 院 laid aside his hat and coat察 and

came up to the fire。

^And how did you like the ride拭院 And how did you like Mrs

Jellyby察my dear拭院said Mr Jarndyce to Ada。

While Ada was speaking to him in reply察I glanced I need not

say with how much interest at his face。 It was a handsome察lively察

quick face察full of change and motion察and his hair was a silvered

iron´grey。 I took him to be nearer sixty than fifty察 but he was

upright察hearty察and robust。 From the moment of his first speaking

to us察 his voice had connected itself with an association in my

mind that I could not define察 but now察 all at once察 a something

sudden in his manner察 and a pleasant expression in his eyes察

recalled the gentleman in the stage´coach察 six years ago察 on the

memorable day of my journey to Reading。 I was certain it was he。 I

never was so frightened in my life as when I made the discovery察

for he caught my glance察and appearing to read my thoughts察gave

such a look at the door that I thought we had lost him。

However察 I am happy to say he remained where he was察 and

asked me what I thought of Mrs Jellyby拭

^She exerts herself very much for Africa察sir察院I said。

    ^Nobly 院 returned Mr Jarndyce。 ^But you answer like Ada。 ̄

Whom I had not heard。 ^You all think something else察I see。 ̄

^We rather thought察院said I察glancing at Richard and Ada察who

entreated me with their eyes to speak察 that perhaps she was a

little unmindful of her home。 ̄

    ^Floored 院cried Mr Jarndyce。

    I was rather alarmed again。

^Well I want to know your real thoughts察my dear。 I may have

sent you there on purpose。 ̄

^We thought that察 perhaps察院 said I察 hesitating察 it is right to

begin with the obligations of home察 sir察 and that察 perhaps察 while

those are overlooked and neglected察no other duties can possibly

be substituted for them。 ̄

^The little Jellybys察院 said Richard察 coming to my relief察 are

really!I can¨t help expressing myself strongly察sir!in a devil of a

state。 ̄

    ^She means well察院said Mr Jarndyce察hastily。 ^The wind¨s in the

east。 ̄

^It was in the north察sir察as we came down察院observed Richard。

^My dear Rick察院said Mr Jarndyce察poking the fire察 I¨ll take an

oath it¨s either in the east察or going to be。 I am always conscious of

an uncomfortable sensation now and then when the wind is

^I dare say it is察Rick。 I believe it is。 And so the little Jell!I had

my doubts about ¨em!are in a!oh察Lord察yes察it¨s easterly 院said

Mr Jarndyce。

He had taken two or three undecided turns up and down while

uttering these broken sentences察retaining the poker in one hand

and rubbing his hair with the other察with a good´natured vexation察

at once so whimsical and so loveable察that I am sure we were more

delighted with him than we could possibly have expressed in any

words。 He gave an arm to Ada and an arm to me察 and bidding

Richard bring a candle察 was leading the way out察 when he

suddenly turned us all back again。

    ^Those little Jellybys。 Couldn¨t you!didn¨t you!now察if it had

rained sugar´plums察or three´cornered raspberry tarts察or anything

of that sort 院said Mr Jarndyce。

    ^O cousin ! 院Ada hastily began。

^Good察 my pretty pet。 I like cousin。 Cousin John察 perhaps察 is

better。 ̄

    ^Then察cousin John ̄ Ada laughingly began again。

^Ha察 ha Very good indeed 院 said Mr Jarndyce察 with great

enjoyment。 ^Sounds uncommonly natural。 Yes察my dear拭院

    ^It did better than that。 It rained Esther。 ̄

    ^Ay拭院said Mr Jarndyce。 ^What did Esther do拭院

^Why察 cousin John察院 said Ada察 clasping her hands upon his

arm察and shaking her head at me across him!for I wanted her to

be quiet此 Esther was their friend directly。 Esther nursed them察

coaxed them to sleep察washed and dressed them察told them stories察

kept them quiet察 bought them keepsakes ̄!My dear girl I had

The warm´hearted darling leaned across her cousin John察and

kissed me察 and then looking up in his face察 boldly said察 At all

events察cousin John察I will thank you for the companion you have
