there察and repeating ^Hush 院went before us on tiptoe察as though
even the sound of her footsteps might reveal to him what she had
said。
Passing through the shop on our way out察 as we had passed
through it on our way in察we found the old man storing a quantity
of packets of waste paper察in a kind of well in the floor。 He seemed
to be working hard察 with the perspiration standing on his
forehead察and had a piece of chalk by him察with which察as he put
each separate package or bundle down察he made a crooked mark
on the panelling of the wall。
Richard and Ada察and Miss Jellyby察and the little old lady察had
gone by him察and I was going察when he touched me on the arm to
stay me察and chalked the letter J upon the wall!in a very curious
manner察 beginning with the end of the letter and shaping it
backward。 It was a capital letter察not a printed one察but just such a
letter as any clerk in Messrs。 Kenge and Carboy¨s office would
have made。
^Can you read it拭院he asked me with a keen glance。
^Surely察院said I。 ^It¨s very plain。 ̄
^What is it拭院
^J。 ̄
With another glance at me察and a glance at the door察he rubbed
it out察and turned an a in its place not a capital letter this time察
and said察 What¨s that拭院
I told him。 He then rubbed that out察and turned the letter r察and
asked me the same question。 He went on quickly察 until he had
formed察in the same curious and bottoms of the letters察 the word
Jarndyce察without once leaving two letters on the wall together。
^What does that spell拭院he asked me。

When I told him察he laughed。 In the same odd way察yet with the
same rapidity察he then produced singly察and rubbed out singly察the
letters forming the words Bleak House。 These察 in some
astonishment察I also read察and he laughed again。
^Hi 院said the old man察laying aside the chalk察 I have a turn for
copying from memory察 you see察 miss察 though I can neither read
nor write。 ̄
He looked so disagreeable察 and his cat looked so wickedly at
me察 as if I were a blood´relation of the birds upstairs察 that I was
quite relieved by Richard¨s appearing at the door and saying此
^Miss Summerson察I hope you are not bargaining for the sale of
your hair。 Don¨t be tempted。 Three sacks below are quite enough
for Mr Krook 院
I lost no time in wishing Mr Krook good morning察and joining
my friends outside察where we parted with the little old lady察who
gave us her blessing with great ceremony察 and renewed her
assurance of yesterday in reference to her intention of settling
estates on Ada and me。 Before we finally turned out of those lanes察
we looked back察and saw Mr Krook standing at his shop door察in
his spectacles察looking after us察with his cat upon his shoulder察and
her tail sticking up on one side of his hairy cap察like a tall feather。
^Quite an adventure for a morning in London 院 said Richard察
with a sigh。 ^Ah察cousin察cousin察it¨s a weary word this Chancery 院
^It is to me察and has been ever since I can remember察院returned
Ada。 ^I am grieved that I should be the enemy!as I suppose I
am!of a great number of relations and others察 and that they
should be my enemies!as I suppose they are察and that we should
all be ruining one another察without knowing how or why察and be in
constant doubt and discord all our lives。 It seems very strange察as

there must be right somewhere察 that an honest judge in real
earnest has not been able to find out through all these years where
it is。 ̄
^Ah察 cousin 院 said Richard。 ^Strange indeed all this wasteful
wanton chess´playing is very strange。 To see that composed court
yesterday jogging on so serenely察and to think of the wretchedness
of the pieces on the board察 gave me the headache and the
heartache both together。 My head ached with wondering how it
happened察 if men were neither fools nor rascals察 and my heart
ached to think they could possibly be either。 But at all events察
Ada!I may call you Ada拭院
^Of course you may察cousin Richard。 ̄
^At all events察 Ada察 Chancery will work none of its bad
influence on us。 We have happily been brought together察thanks to
our good kinsman察and it can¨t divide us now 院
^Never察I hope察cousin Richard 院said Ada察gently。
Miss Jellyby gave my arm a squeeze察and me a very significant
look。 I smiled in return察and we made the rest of the way back very
pleasantly。
In half´an´hour after our arrival察Mrs Jellyby appeared察and in
the course of an hour the various things necessary for breakfast
straggled one by one into the dining´room。 I do not doubt that Mrs
Jellyby had gone to bed察and got up in the usual manner察but she
presented no appearance of having changed her dress。 She was
greatly occupied during breakfast察for the morning¨s post brought
a heavy correspondence relative to Borrioboola´Gha察which would
occasion her she said to pass a busy day。 The children tumbled
about察 and notched memoranda of their accidents in their legs察
which were perfect little calendars of distress察and Peepy was lost

for an hour and a half察 and brought home from Newgate market
by a policeman。 The equable manner in which Mrs Jellyby
sustained both his absence察and his restoration to the family circle察
surprised us all。
She was by that time perseveringly dictating to Caddy察 and
Caddy was fast relapsing into the inky condition in which we had
found her。 At one o¨clock an open carriage arrived for us察 and a
cart for our luggage。 Mrs Jellyby charged us with many
remembrances to her good friend察 Mr Jarndyce察 Caddy left her
desk to see us depart察kissed me in the passage察and stood察biting
her pen察and sobbing on the steps察Peepy察I am happy to say察was
asleep察 and spared the pain of separation I was not without
misgivings that he had gone to Newgate market in search of me察
and all the other children got up behind the barouche and fell off察
and we saw them察with great concern察scattered over the surface of
Thavies Inn察as we rolled out of its precincts。
