introduced Richard to Mr Vholes察for a present of five pounds。

^Did he拭院said my Guardian察with a passing shade of vexation

on his face。 ^But there you have the man。 There you have the

man There is nothing mercenary in that察with him。 He has no idea

of the value of money。 He introduces Rick察 and then he is good

friends with Mr Vholes察 and borrows five pounds of him。 He

means nothing by it察and thinks nothing of it。 He told you him self察

I¨ll be bound察my dear拭院

    ^O yes 院said I。

    ^Exactly 院 cried my Guardian察 quite triumphant。 ^There you

have the man If he had meant any harm by it察or was conscious of

any harm in it察he wouldn¨t tell it。 He tells it as he does it察in mere

simplicity。 But you shall see him in his own home察and then you¨ll

understand him better。 We must pay a visit to Harold Skimpole察

and caution him on these points。 Lord bless you察 my dears察 an

infant察an infant 院

In pursuance of this plan察we went into London on an early day察

and presented ourselves at Mr Skimpole¨s door。

He lived in a place called the Polygon察in Somers Town察where

there were at that time a number of poor Spanish refugees

walking about in cloaks察 smoking little paper cigars。 Whether he

was a better tenant than one might have supposed察 in

consequence of his friend Somebody always paying his rent at last察

or whether his inaptitude for business rendered it particularly

difficult to turn him out察 I don¨t know察 but he had occupied the

same house some years。 It was in a state of dilapidation quite

equal to our expectation。 Two or three of the area railing were

gone察the water´butt was broken察the knocker was loose察 the bell

handle had been pulled off a long time察 to judge from the rusty

state of the wire察 and dirty footprints on the steps were the only

signs of its being inhabited。

A slatternly full´blown girl察 who seemed to be bursting out at

the rents in her gown and the cracks in her shoes察like an overripe

berry察answered our knock by opening the door a very little way

and stopping up the gap with her figure。 As she knew Mr Jarndyce

indeed Ada and I both thought that she evidently associated him

with the receipt of her wages察 she immediately relented and

allowed us to pass in。 The lock of the door being in a disabled

condition察 she then applied herself to securing it with the chain察

which was not in good action either察 and said would we go

upstairs拭

We went upstairs to the first floor察still seeing no other furniture

than the dirty footprints。 Mr Jarndyce察without further ceremony察

entered a room there察and we followed。 It was dingy enough察and

not at all clean察but furnished with an odd kind of shabby luxury察

with a large footstool察a sofa察and plenty of cushions察an easy´chair察

and plenty of pillows察 a piano察 books察 drawing materials察 music察

newspapers察 and a few sketches and pictures。 A broken pane of

glass in one of the dirty windows was papered and wafered over察

but there was a little plate of hothouse nectarines on the table察and

there was another of grapes察 and another of sponge´cakes察 and

there was a bottle of light wine。 Mr Skimpole himself reclined

upon the sofa察in a dressing´gown察 drinking some fragrant coffee

from an old china cup!it was then about midday!and looking at

a collection of wallflowers in the balcony。

He was not in the least disconcerted by our appearance察 but

rose and received us in his usual airy manner。

^Here I am察 you see 院 he said察 when we were seated察 not

without some little difficulty察 the greater part of the chairs being

broken。 ^Here I am This is my frugal breakfast。 Some men want

legs of beef and mutton for breakfast察I don¨t。 Give me my peach察

my cup of coffee察and my claret察I am content。 I don¨t want them

for themselves察 but they remind me of the sun。 There¨s nothing

solar about legs of beef and mutton。 Mere animal satisfaction 院

^This is our friend¨s consulting´room or would be察 if he ever

prescribed察his sanctum察his studio察院said my Guardian to us。

^Yes察院said Mr Skimpole察turning his bright face about察 this is

the bird¨s cage。 This is where the bird lives and sings。 They pluck

his feathers now and then察 and clip his wings察 but he sings察 he

sings 院

He handed us the grapes察 repeating in his radiant way察 he

sings Not an ambitious note察but still he sings。 ̄

    ^These are very fine察院said my Guardian。 ^A present 院

    ^No察院 he answered。 ^No Some amiable gardener sells them。

His man wanted to know察 when he brought them last evening察

whether he should wait for the money。 `Really察my friend察 I said察 I

think not!if your time is of any value to you。¨ I suppose it was察for

he went away。 ̄

My Guardian looked at us with a smile察as though he asked us察

^is it possible to be worldly with this baby拭院

^This is a day察院said Mr Skimpole察gaily taking a little claret in a

tumbler察 that will ever be remembered here。 We shall call it the

Saint Clare and Saint Summerson day。 You must see my

daughters。 I have a blue´eyed daughter who is my Beauty

daughter察 I have a Sentiment daughter察 and I have a Comedy

daughter。 You must see them all。 They¨ll be enchanted。 ̄

He was going to summon them察when my Guardian interposed察

and asked him to pause a moment察as he wished to say a word to

him first。 ^My dear Jarndyce察院he cheerfully replied察going back to

his sofa察 as many moments as you please。 Time is no object here。

We never know what o¨clock it is察and we never care。 Not the way

to get on in life察 you¨ll tell me拭 Certainly。 But we don¨t get on in

life。 We don¨t pretend to do it。 ̄

My Guardian looked at us again察 plainly saying察 You hear

him拭院

^Now Harold察院 he began察 the word I have to say relates to

Rick。 ̄

^The dearest friend I have 院 returned Mr Skimpole察 cordially。

^I suppose he ought not to be my dearest friend察 as he is not on

terms with you。 But he is察 I can¨t help it察 he is full of youthful

poetry察 and I love him。 If you don¨t like it察 I can¨t help it。 I love

him。 ̄

The engaging frankness with which he made this declaration察

really had a disinterested appearance察 and captivated my

Guardian察if not察for the moment察Ada too。

    ^You are welcome to love
