again understand me察 as a friend。 Without entering into further

explanations察I may repeat that the idol is down。 I have no purpose

to serve now察but burial in oblivion。 To that I have pledged myself。

I owe it to myself察and I owe it to the shattered image察 as also to

the circumstances over which I have no control。 If you was to

express to me by a gesture察 by a wink察 that you saw lying

anywhere in your late lodgings察any papers that so much as looked

like the papers in question察I would pitch them into the fire察sir察on

my own responsibility。 ̄

Mr Weevle nods。 Mr Guppy察much elevated in his own opinion

by having delivered these observations察with an air in part forensic

and in part romantic!this gentleman having a passion for

conducting anything in the form of an examination察or delivering

anything in the form of a summing up or a speech!accompanies

his friend with dignity to the court。

Never察since it has been a court察has it had such a Fortunatus¨s

purse of gossip as in the proceedings at the rag and bottle shop。

Regularly察 every morning at eight察 is the elder Mr Smallweed

brought down to the corner and carried in察 accompanied by Mrs

Smallweed察 Judy察 and Bart察 and regularly察 all day察 do they all

remain there until nine at night察 solaced by gypsy dinners察 not

abundant in quantity察 from the cook¨s shop察 rummaging and

searching察digging察delving察and diving among the treasures of the

late lamented。 What those treasures are察they keep so secret察that

the court is maddened。 In its delirium it imagines guineas pouring

out of teapots察 crown´pieces overflowing punch´bowls察 old chairs

and mattresses stuffed with Bank of England notes。 It possesses

itself of the sixpenny history with highly´coloured folding

frontispiece of Mr Daniel Dancer and his sister察 and also of Mr

Elwes察of Suffolk察and transfers all the facts from those authentic

narratives to Mr Krook。 Twice when the dustman is called in to

carry off a cartload of old paper察 ashes察 and broken bottles察 the

whole court assembles and pries into the baskets as they come

forth。 Many times the two gentlemen who write with the ravenous

little pens on the tissue paper are seen prowling in the

neighbourhood!shy of each other察 their late partnership being

dissolved。 The Sol skilfully carries a vein of the prevailing interest

through the Harmonic nights。 Little Swills察 in what are

professionally known as ^patter ̄ allusions to the subject察 is

received with loud applause察and the same vocalist ^gags ̄ in the

regular business like a man inspired。 Even Miss M。 Melvilleson察in

the revived Caledonian melody of ^We¨re a nodding察院 points the

sentiment that ^the dogs love broo ̄ whatever the nature of that

refreshment may be with such archness察 and such a turn of the

head towards next door察 that she is immediately understood to

mean察Mr Smallweed loves to find money察and is nightly honoured

with a double encore。 For all this察 the court discovers nothing察

and察as Mrs Piper and Mrs Perkins now communicate to the late

lodger whose appearance is the signal for a general rally察 it is in

one continual ferment to discover everything察and more。

Mr Weevle and Mr Guppy察 with every eye in the court¨s head

upon them察knock at the closed door of the late lamented¨s house察

in a high state of popularity。 But察 being contrary to the court¨s

expectation admitted察 they immediately become unpopular察 and

are considered to mean no good。

The shutters are more or less closed all over the house察and the

ground´floor is sufficiently dark to require candles。 Introduced

the sunlight察can at first see nothing save darkness and shadows察

but they gradually discern the elder Mr Smallweed察seated in his

chair upon the brink of a well or grave of waste paper察the virtuous

Judy groping therein察like a female sexton察and Mrs Smallweed on

the level ground in the vicinity察 snowed up in a heap of paper

fragments察 print and manuscript察 which would appear to be the

accumulated compliments that have been sent flying at her in the

course of the day。 The whole party察Small included察are blackened

with dust and dirt察and present a fiendish appearance not relieved

by the general aspect of the room。 There is more litter and lumber

in it than of old察and it is dirtier if possible察likewise察it is ghostly

with traces of its dead inhabitant察 and even with his chalked

writing on the wall。

On the entrance of visitors察 Mr Smallweed and Judy

simultaneously fold their arms and stop in their researches。

^Aha 院croaks the old gentleman。 ^How de do察gentlemen察how

Mr Weevle察thanking him察casts an eye about。 Mr Guppy¨s eye

follows Mr Weevle¨s eye。 Mr Weevle¨s eye comes back without any

new intelligence in it。 Mr Guppy¨s eye comes back and meets Mr

Smallweed¨s eye。 That engaging old gentleman is still murmuring察

like some wound´up instrument running down察 How de do察sir!

how de!how!。 ̄ And then察 having run down察 he lapses into

grinning silence察 as Mr Guppy starts at seeing Mr Tulkinghorn

standing in the darkness opposite察with his hands behind him。
