beautiful girl down upon the floor too察holding my scarred face to
her lovely cheek察bathing it with tears and kisses察 rocking me to
and fro like a child察 calling me by every tender name that she
could think of察and pressing me to her faithful heart。

Chapter 37
Jarndyce And Jarndyce
f the secret that I had to keep had been mine察 I must have
confided it to Ada before we had been long together。 But it
I
was not mine察 and I did not feel that I had a right to tell it察
even to my Guardian察unless some great emergency arose。 It was a
weight to bear alone察 still my present duty appeared to be plain察
and察blest in the attachment of my dear察I did not want an impulse
and encouragement to do it。 Though often when she was asleep察
and all was quiet察 the remembrance of my mother kept me
waking察 and made the night sorrowful察 I did not yield to it at
another time察 and Ada found me what I used to be!except察 of
course察in that particular of which I have said enough察and which I
have no intention of mentioning any more察just now察if I can help
it。
The difficulty that I felt in being quite composed that first
evening察when Ada asked me察over our work察if the family were at
the house察and when I was obliged to answer yes察I believed so察for
Lady Dedlock had spoken to me in the woods the day before
yesterday察was great。 Greater still察when Ada asked me what she
had said察 and when I replied that she had been kind and
interested察 and when Ada察 while admitting her beauty and
elegance察 remarked upon her proud manner察 and her imperious
chilling air。 But Charley helped me through unconsciously察 by
telling us that Lady Dedlock had only stayed at the House two
nights察on her way from London to visit at some other great house

in the next county察and that she had left early on the morning after
we had seen her at our view察as we called it。 Charley verified the
adage about little pitchers察 I am sure察 for she heard of more
sayings and doings察in a day察than would have come to my ears in a
month。
We were to stay a month at Mr Boythorn¨s。 My pet had scarcely
been there a bright week察 as I recollect the time察 when one
evening after we had finished helping the gardener in watering his
flowers察and just as the candles were lighted察 Charley察 appearing
with a very important air behind Ada¨s chair察 beckoned me
mysteriously out of the room。
^Oh if you please察 miss察院 said Charley in a whisper察 with her
eyes at their roundest and largest。 ^You¨re wanted at the Dedlock
Arms。 ̄
^Why察 Charley察院 said I察 who can possibly want me at the
public´house拭院
^I don¨t know察 miss察院 returned Charley察 putting her head
forward察 and folding her hands tight upon the band of her little
apron察 which she always did察 in the enjoyment of anything
mysterious or confidential察 but it¨s a gentleman察 miss察 and his
compliments察and will you please to come without saying anything
about it。 ̄
^Whose compliments察Charley拭院
^His¨n察miss察院returned Charley此whose grammatical education
was advancing察but not very rapidly。
^And how do you come to be the messenger察Charley拭院
^I am not the messenger察if you please察miss察院returned my little
maid。 ^It was W。 Grubble察miss。 ̄
^And who is W。 Grubble察Charley拭院

^Mister Grubble察 miss察院 returned Charley。 ^Don¨t you know察
miss拭 The Dedlock Arms察 by W。 Grubble察院 which Charley
delivered as if she were slowly spelling out the sign。
^Ay拭The landlord察Charley拭院
^Yes察 miss。 If you please察 miss察 his wife is a beautiful woman察
but she broke her ankle and it never joined。 And her brother¨s the
sawyer察that was put in the cage察miss察and they expect he¨ll drink
himself to death entirely on beer察院said Charley。
Not knowing what might be the matter察 and being easily
apprehensive now察I thought it best to go to this place by myself。 I
bade Charley be quick with my bonnet and veil察 and my shawl察
and having put them on察 went away down the little hilly street察
where I was as much at home as in Mr Boythorn¨s garden。
Mr Grubble was standing in his shirt sleeves at the door of his
very clean little tavern察 waiting for me。 He lifted off his hat with
both hands when he saw me coming察 and carrying it so察 as if it
were an iron vessel it looked as heavy察 preceded me along the
sanded passage to his best parlour此 a neat carpeted room察 with
more plants in it than were quite convenient察 a coloured print of
Queen Caroline察several shells察a good many tea´trays察two stuffed
and dried fish in glass cases察and either a curious egg or a curious
pumpkin but I don¨t know which察and I doubt if many people did
hanging from the ceiling。 I knew Mr Grubble very well by sight察
from his often standing at his door。 A pleasant´looking察 stoutish察
middle´aged man察 who never seemed to consider himself cosily
dressed for his own fireside without his hat and top´boots察but who
never wore a coat except at church。
He snuffed the candle察and backing away a little to see how it
looked察 backed out of the room!unexpectedly to me察 for I was

going to ask him by whom he had been sent。 The door of the
opposite parlour being then opened察I heard some voices察familiar
in my ears察 I thought察 which stopped。 A quick light step
approached the room in which I was察and who should stand before
me察but Richard
^My dear Esther 院he said察 my best friend 院and he really was
so warm´hearted and earnest察 that in the first surprise and
pleasure of his brotherly greeting察I could scarcely find breath to
tell him that Ada was well。
^Answering my very thoughts!always the same dear girl 院said
Richard察leading me to a chair察and seating himself beside me。
I put my veil up察but not quite。
^Always the same dear girl 院 said Richard察
