so much fonder of you察my love察than of the Chancellor。 Though I

do attend court regularly。 By the bye察my dear察mentioning pocket´

handkerchiefs! ̄ Miss Flite here looked at Charley察who had been

to meet her at the place where the coach stopped。 Charley glanced

at me察and looked unwilling to pursue the suggestion。

^Ve´ry right 院 said Miss Flite察 ve´ry correct。 Truly Highly

indiscreet of me to mention it察but my dear Miss Fitz´Jarndyce察I

am afraid I am at times between ourselves察you wouldn¨t think it

a little!rambling you know察院 said Miss Flite察 touching her

forehead。 ^Nothing more。 ̄

^What were you going to tell me拭院said I察smiling察for I saw she

wanted to go on。 ^You have roused my curiosity察 and now you

must gratify it。 ̄

Miss Flite looked at Charley for advice in this important crisis察

who said察 If you please察 ma¨am察 you had better tell them察院 and

therein gratified Miss Flite beyond measure。

^So sagacious察 our young friend察院 said she to me察 in her

mysterious way。 ^Diminutive。 But ve´ry sagacious Well察my dear察

it¨s a pretty anecdote。 Nothing more。 Still I think it charming。 Who

should follow us down the road from the coach察 my dear察 but a

poor person in a very ungenteel bonnet! ̄

     ^Jenny察if you please察miss察院said Charley。

^Just so 院 Miss Flite acquiesced with the greatest suavity。

^Jenny。 Ye´es And what does she tell our young friend察but that

there has been a lady with a veil inquiring at her cottage after my

dear Fitz´Jarndyce¨s health察and taking a handkerchief away with

her as a little keepsake察 merely because it was my amiable Fitz´

Jarndyce¨s Now察you know察so very prepossessing in the lady with

the veil 院

^If you please察 miss察院 said Charley察 to whom I looked in some

astonishment察 Jenny says that when her baby died察 you left a

handkerchief there察and that she put it away and kept it with the

baby¨s little things。 I think察 if you please察 partly because it was

yours察miss察and partly because it had covered the baby。 ̄

^Diminutive察院 whispered Miss Flite察 making a variety of

motions about her own forehead to express intellect in Charley。

^But exceedingly sagacious And so clear My love察 she¨s clearer

than any counsel I ever heard 院

    ^Yes察Charley察院I returned。 ^I remember it。 Well拭院

^Well察 miss察院 said Charley察 and that¨s the handkerchief the

lady took。 And Jenny wants you to know that she wouldn¨t have

made away with it herself for a heap of money察but that the lady

took it察and left some money instead。 Jenny don¨t know her at all察

if you please察miss。 ̄

    ^Why察who can she be拭院said I。

^My love察院Miss Flite suggested察advancing her lips to my ear察

with her most mysterious look察 in my opinion!don¨t mention this

to our diminutive friend!she¨s the Lord Chancellor¨s wife。 He¨s

married察you know。 And I understand she leads him a terrible life。

Throws his lordship¨s papers into the fire察my dear察if he won¨t pay

the jeweller 院

I did not think very much about this lady then察 for I had an

impression that it might be Caddy。 Besides察 my attention was

diverted by my visitor察 who was cold after her ride察 and looked

hungry察 and who察 our dinner being brought in察 required some

little assistance in arraying herself with great satisfaction in a

pitiable old scarf and a much´worn and often´mended pair of

gloves察 which she had brought down in a paper parcel。 I had to

preside察too察over the entertainment察consisting of a dish of fish察a

roast´fowl察a sweetbread察vegetables察pudding察and Madeira察and it

was so pleasant to see how she enjoyed it察and with what state and

ceremony she did honour to it察that I was soon thinking of nothing

else。

When we had finished察 and had our little dessert before us察

embellished by the hands of my dear察 who would yield the

superintendence of everything prepared for me to no one察 Miss

Flite was so very chatty and happy察that I though I would lead her

to her own history察as she was always pleased to talk about herself。

I began by saying ^You have attended on the Lord Chancellor

many years察Miss Flite拭院

^O many察 many察 many years察 my dear。 But I expect a

Judgement。 Shortly。 ̄

There was an anxiety even in her hopefulness察 that made me

doubtful if I had done right in approaching the subject。 I thought I

would say no more about it。

    ^My father expected a Judgement察院 says Miss Flite。 ^My

brother。 My sister。 They all expected a Judgement。 The same that

I expect。 ̄

    ^They are all! ̄

^Ye´es。 Dead of course察my dear察院said she。

As I saw she would go on察 I thought it best to try to be

serviceable to her by meeting the theme察rather than avoiding it。

^Would it not be wiser察院 said I察 to expect this Judgement no

more拭院

^Why察my dear察院she answered promptly察 of course it would 院

^And to attend the court no more拭院

^Equally of course察院 said she。 ^Very wearing to be always in

expectation of what never comes察 my dear Fitz´Jarndyce

Wearing察I assure you察to the bone 院

She slightly showed me her arm察 and it was fearfully thin

indeed。

^But察my dear察院she went on in her mysterious way察 there¨s a

dreadful attraction in the place。 Hush Don¨t mention it to our

diminutive friend when she comes in。 Or it may frighten her。 With

good reason。 There¨s a cruel attraction in the place察you can¨t leave

it。 And you must expect。 ̄

I tried to assure her that this was not so。 She heard me

patiently and smilingly察but was ready with her own answer。

    ^Ay察ay察ay You think so察because I am a little rambling。 Ve´ry

absurd察to be a little rambling察is it not拭 Ve´ry confusing察 too。 To

the head。 I find it so。 But察my dear察I have been there many years察

and I have noticed。 It¨s the Mace and Seal upon the table。 ̄

What could they do察did she think拭I mildly asked her。

    ^Draw察院returned Miss Flite。 ^Draw people on察my dear。 Draw

peace out of them。 Sense out of them。 Good looks out of them。
