before the fire察wondering and wondering about Bleak House察and

wondering and wondering that yesterday morning should seem so

long ago。 I don¨t know where my thoughts had wandered察 when

they were recalled by a tap at the door。

I opened it softly察and found Miss Jellyby shivering there察with a

broken candle in a broken candlestick in one hand察and an eggcup

in the other。

    ^Good night 院she said察very sulkily。

    ^Good night 院said I。

^May I come in拭院she shortly and unexpectedly asked me in the

same sulky way。

    ^Certainly察院said I。 ^Don¨t wake Miss Clare。 ̄

She would not sit down察but stood by the fire察dipping her inky

middle finger in the eggcup察 which contained vinegar察 and

smearing it over the ink stains on her face察 frowning察 the whole

time察and looking very gloomy。

^I wish Africa was dead 院she said on a sudden。

   I was going to remonstrate。

    ^I do 院she said。 ^Don¨t talk to me察Miss Summerson。 I hate it

and detest it。 It¨s a beast 院

I told her she was tired察and I was sorry。 I put my hand upon

her head察and touched her forehead察and said it was hot now察but

would be cool tomorrow。 She still stood察pouting and frowning at

me察but presently put down her eggcup察and turned softly towards

the bed where Ada lay。

^She is very pretty 院she said察with the same knitted brow察and

in the same uncivil manner。

   I assented with a smile。

    ^An orphan。 Ain¨t she拭院

    ^Yes。 ̄

But knows a quantity察 I suppose拭 Can dance察and play music察

and sing拭She can talk French察I suppose察and do geography察and

globes察and needlework察and every thing拭院

    ^No doubt察院said I。

    ^I can¨t察院 she returned。 ^I can¨t do anything hardly察 except

write。 I¨m always writing for Ma。 I wonder you two were not

ashamed of yourselves to come in this afternoon察and see me able

to do nothing else。 It was like your ill´nature。 Yet you think

yourselves very fine察I dare say 院

I could see that the poor girl was near crying察and I resumed my

chair without speaking察and looked at her I hope as mildly as I

felt towards her。

^It¨s disgraceful察院she said。 ^You know it is。 The whole house is

disgraceful。 The children are disgraceful。 I¨m disgraceful。 Pa¨s

miserable察and no wonder Priscilla drinks!she¨s always drinking。

It¨s a great shame and great story of you察 if you say you didn¨t

smell her today。 It was as bad as a public´house察waiting at dinner察

you know it was 院

    ^My dear察I don¨t know it察院said I。

    ^You do察院she said察very shortly。 ^You shan¨t say you don¨t。 You

do 院

                                   Bleak House 68

^O察my dear 院said I察 if you won¨t let me speak! ̄

^You¨re speaking now。 You know you are。 Don¨t tell stories察

Miss Summerson。 ̄

^My dear察院said I察 as long as you won¨t hear me out! ̄

    ^I don¨t want to hear you out。 ̄

^O yes察I think you do察院said I察 because that would be so very

unreasonable。 I did not know what you tell me察 because the

servant did not come near me at dinner察 but I don¨t doubt what

you tell me察and I am sorry to hear it。 ̄

    ^You needn¨t make a merit of that察院said she。

    ^No察my dear察院said I。 ^That would be very foolish。 ̄

She was still standing by the bed察and now stooped down but

still with the same discontented face and kissed Ada。 That done察

she came softly back察and stood by the side of my chair。 Her bosom

was heaving in a distressful manner that I greatly pitied察 but I

thought it better not to speak。

^I wish I was dead 院she broke out。 ^I wish we were all dead。 It

would be a great deal better for us。 ̄

In a moment afterwards察 she knelt on the ground察at my side察

hid her face in my dress察 passionately begged my pardon察 and

wept。 I comforted her察and would have raised her察but she cried察

No察no察she wanted to stay there

^You used to teach girls察院 she said。 ^If you could only have

taught me察I could have learnt from you I am so very miserable察

and I like you so much 院

I could not persuade her to sit by me察 or to do anything but

move a ragged stool to where she was kneeling察and take that察and

still hold my dress in the same manner。 By degrees察the poor tired

girl fell asleep察 and then I contrived to raise her head察 so that it

should rest on my lap察and to cover us both with shawls。 The fire

went out察and all night long she slumbered thus察 before the ashy

grate。 At first I was painfully awake察 and vainly tried to lose

myself察 with my eyes closed察 among the scenes of the day。 At

length察 by slow degrees察 they became indistinct and mingled。 I

began to lose the identity of the sleeper resting on me。 Now it was

Ada此now察one of my old Reading friends from whom I could not

believe I had so recently parted。 Now察it was the little mad woman

worn out with curtseying and smiling察now察some one in authority

at Bleak House。 Lastly察it was no one察and I was no one。

The purblind day was feebly struggling with the fog察 when I

opened my eyes to encounter those of a dirty´faced little spectre

fixed upon me。 Peepy had scaled his crib察and crept down in his

bed´gown and cap察and was so cold that his teeth were chattering

as if he had cut them all。

                        A Morning Adventure

lthough the morning was raw察 and although the fog still

Aseemed heavy!I say seemed察 for the windows were so

encrusted with dirt察 that they would have made

Midsummer sunshine dim!I was sufficiently forewarned of the

discomfort within doors at that early hour察and sufficiently curious

about London察to think it a good idea on the part of Miss Jellyby

when she proposed that we should go out for a walk。

^Ma won¨t be down for ever so long察院she said察 and then it¨s a

chance if breakfast¨s ready for an hour afterwards察they dawdle so。

As to Pa察he gets what he can察and goes to the office。 He never has

what you would call a regular breakfast。 Priscilla leaves him out

the loaf and some milk察when there is any察over night。 Sometimes

there isn¨t any milk察 and sometimes the cat drinks it。 But I¨m

afraid you must be tired察 Miss Summerson察 and perhaps you

would rather go to bed。 ̄

^I am not at all tired察my dear察院said I察 and would much prefer

to go out。 ̄

^If you¨re sure you would察院returned Miss Jellyby察 I¨ll get my

things on。 ̄
