and the oil is there!and he is not there 院Tony ends this with a
groan。
Mr Guppy takes the light。 They go down察more dead than alive察
and holding one another察 push open the door of the back shop。
The cat has retreated close to it察and stands snarling!not at them察
at something on the ground察before the fire。 There is very little fire
left in the grate察but there is a smouldering suffocating vapour in
the room察and a dark greasy coating on the walls and ceiling。 The
chairs and table察and the bottle so rarely absent from the table察all
stand as usual。 On one chair´back察 hang the old man¨s hairy cap
and coat。
^Look 院 whispers the lodger察 pointing his friend¨s attention to
these objects with a trembling finger。 ^I told you so。 When I saw
him last察he took his cap off察took out the little bundle of old letters察

hung his cap on the back of the chair!his coat was there already察
for he had pulled that off察before he went to put the shutters up!
and I left him turning the letters over in his hand察 standing just
where that crumbled black thing is upon the floor。 ̄
Is he hanging somewhere拭They look up。 No。
^See 院whispers Tony。 ^At the foot of the same chair察there lies
a dirty bit of thin red cord that they tie up pens with。 That went
round the letters。 He undid it slowly察leering and laughing at me察
before he began to turn them over察 and threw it there。 I saw it
fall。 ̄
^What¨s the matter with the cat拭院 says Mr Guppy。 ^Look at
her 院
^Mad察I think。 And no wonder察in this evil place。 ̄
They advance slowly察 looking at all these things。 The cat
remains where they found her察still snarling at the something on
the ground察before the fire and between the two chairs。 What is it拭
Hold up the light。
Here is a small burnt patch of flooring察here is the tinder from a
little bundle of burnt paper察but not so light as usual察seeming to
be steeped in something察 and here is!is it the cinder of a small
charred and broken log of wood sprinkled with white ashes察or is it
coal拭 O Horror察 he Is here and this察 from which we run away察
striking out the light and overturning one another into the street察
is all that represents him。
Help察help察help come into this house for Heaven¨s sake
Plenty will come in察but none can help。 The Lord Chancellor of
that Court察true to his title in his last act察has died the death of all

under all names soever察 where false pretences are made察 and

Interlopers
ow do those two gentlemen not very neat about the cuffs
Nand buttons who attended the last Coroner¨s Inquest at
the Sol¨s Arms察reappear in the precincts with surprising
swiftness being察 in fact察 breathlessly fetched by the active and
intelligent beadle察 and institute perquisitions through the court察
and dive into the Sol¨s parlour察and write with ravenous little pens
on tissue´paper。 Now do they note down察 in the watches of the
night察how the neighbourhood of Chancery Lane was yesterday察at
about midnight察thrown into a state of the most intense agitation
and excitement by the following alarming and horrible discovery。
Now do they set forth how it will doubtless be remembered察that
some time back a painful sensation was created in the public
mind察by a case of mysterious death from opium occurring on the
first floor of the house occupied as a rag察 bottle察 and general
marine store shop察 by an eccentric individual of intemperate
habits察 far advanced in life察 named Krook察 and how by a
remarkable coincidence察 Krook was examined at the inquest察
which it may be recollected was held on that occasion at the Sol¨s
Arms察 a well´conducted tavern察 immediately adjoining the
premises in question察 on the west side察 and licensed to a highly
respectable landlord察 Mr James George Bogsby。 Now do they
show in as many words as possible察 how during some hours of
yesterday evening a very peculiar smell was observed by the
inhabitants of the court察 in which the tragical occurrence which

forms the subject of that present account transpired察 and which
odour was at one time so powerful察 that Mr Swills察 a comic
vocalist察 professionally engaged by Mr J。 G。 Bogsby察 has himself
stated to our reporter that he mentioned to Miss M。 Melvilleson察a
lady of some pretensions to musical ability察 likewise engaged by
Mr J。 G。 Bogsby to sing at a series of concerts called Harmonic
Assemblies or Meetings察 which it would appear are held at the
Sol¨s Arms察 under Mr Bogsby¨s direction察 pursuant to the Act of
George the Second察 that he Mr Swills found his voice seriously
affected by the impure state of the atmosphere察 his jocose
expression察 at the time察 being察 that he was like an empty post´
office察for he hadn¨t a single note in him。 ̄ How this account of Mr
Swills is entirely corroborated by two intelligent married females
residing in the same court察and known respectively by the names
of Mrs Piper and Mrs Perkins察both of whom observed the foetid
effluvia察and regarded them as being emitted from the premises in
the occupation of Krook察the unfortunate deceased。 All this and a
great deal more察the two gentlemen察who have formed an amicable
partnership in the melancholy catastrophe察 write down on the
spot察and the boy population of the court out of bed in a moment
swarm up the shutters of the Sol¨s Arm¨s parlour察 to behold the
tops of their heads while they are about it。
The whole court察adult as well as boy察is sleepless for that night察
and can do nothing but wrap up its many heads察and talk of the ill´
fated house察 and look at it。 Miss Flite has been bravely rescued
from her chamber察as if it w
