or resolutions of ladies¨ meetings察 which she read to us察 others
were applications from people excited in various ways about the
cultivation of coffee察 and natives察 others required answers察 and
these she sent her eldest daughter from the table three or four
times to write。 She was full of business察and undoubtedly was察as
she had told us察devoted to the cause。
I was a little curious to know who a mild bald gentleman in
spectacles was察who dropped into a vacant chair there was no top
or bottom察in particular after the fish was taken away察and seemed
passively to submit himself to Borrioboola´Gha察 but not to be

actively interested in that settlement。 As he never spoke a word察
he might have been a native察 but for his complexion。 It was not
until we left the table察and he remained alone with Richard察 that
the possibility of his being Mr Jellyby ever entered my head。 But
he was Mr Jellyby察and a loquacious young man called Mr Quale察
with large shining knobs for temples察and his hair all brushed to
the back of his head察 who came in the evening察 and told Ada he
was a philanthropist察 also informed her that he called the
matrimonial alliance of Mrs Jellyby with Mr Jellyby the union of
mind and matter。
This young man察besides having a great deal to say for himself
about Africa察and a project of his for teaching the coffee colonists
to teach the natives to turn piano´forte legs and establish an
export trade察 delighted in drawing Mrs Jellyby out by saying察 I
believe now察Mrs Jellyby察you have received as many as from one
hundred and fifty to two hundred letters respecting Africa in a
single day察have you not拭院or察 If my memory does not deceive me察
Mrs Jellyby察 you once mentioned that you had sent off five
thousand circulars from one post´office at one time拭院always
repeating Mrs Jellyby¨s answer to us like an interpreter。 During
the whole evening察Mr Jellyby sat in a corner with his head against
the wall察as if he were subject to low spirits。 It seemed that he had
several times opened his mouth when alone with Richard察 after
dinner察as if he had something on his mind察but had always shut it
again察to Richard¨s extreme confusion察without saying anything。
Mrs Jellyby察sitting in quite a nest of waste paper察drank coffee
all the evening察 and dictated at intervals to her eldest daughter。
She also held a discussion with Mr Quale察 of which the subject
seemed to be!if I understood it!the Brotherhood of Humanity察

and gave utterance to some beautiful sentiments。 I was not so
attentive an auditor as I might have wished to be察 however察 for
Peepy and the other children came flocking about Ada and me in a
corner of the drawing´room to ask for another story察 so we sat
down among them察and told them in whispers Puss in Boots and I
don¨t know what else察until Mrs Jellyby察accidentally remembering
them察sent them to bed。 As Peepy cried for me to take him to bed察I
carried him upstairs察 where the young woman with the flannel
bandage charged into the midst of the little family like a dragoon察
and overturned them into cribs。
After that察 I occupied myself in making our room a little tidy察
and in coaxing a very cross fire that had been lighted察 to burn察
which at last it did察quite brightly。 On my return downstairs察I felt
that Mrs Jellyby looked down upon me rather察 for being so
frivolous察and I was sorry for it察 though at the same time I knew
that I had no higher pretensions。
It was nearly midnight before we found an opportunity of going
to bed察 and even then we left Mrs Jellyby among her papers
drinking coffee察and Miss Jellyby biting the feather of her pen。
^What a strange house 院said Ada察when we got upstairs。 ^How
curious of my cousin Jarndyce to send us here 院
^My love察院said I察 it quite confuses me。 I want to understand it察
and I can¨t understand it at all。 ̄
^What拭院asked Ada察with her pretty smile。
^All this察my dear察院said I。 ^It must be very good of Mrs Jellyby
to take such pains about a scheme for the benefit of Natives!and
yet!Peepy and the housekeeping 院
Ada laughed察and put her arm about my neck察as I stood looking
at the fire察and told me I was a quiet察dear察good creature察and had

won her heart。 ^You are so thoughtful察Esther察院she said察 and yet
so cheerful and you do so much察 so unpretendingly You would
make a home out of even this house。 ̄
My simple darling She was quite unconscious that she only
praised herself察and that it was in the goodness of her own heart
that she made so much of me
^May I ask you a question拭院said I察when we had sat before the
fire a little while。
^Five hundred察院said Ada。
^Your cousin察Mr Jarndyce。 I owe so much to him。 Would you
mind describing him to me拭院
Shaking back her golden hair察 Ada turned her eyes upon me
with such laughing wonder察that I was full of wonder too!partly
at her beauty察partly at her surprise。
^Esther 院she cried。
^My dear 院
^You want a description of my cousin Jarndyce拭院
^My dear察I never saw him。 ̄
^And I never saw him 院returned Ada。
Well察to be sure
No察she had never seen him。 Young as she was when her mama
died察 she remembered how the tears would come into her eyes
when she spoke of him察 and of the noble generosity of his
character察which she had said was to be trusted above all earthly
things察and Ada trusted it。 Her cousin Jarndyce had written to her
a few months ago察^a plain察honest letter察院Ada said!proposing
the arrangement we were now to enter on察and telling her that察 in
time it might heal some of the wounds made by the miserable
Chancery suit。 ̄ She had replied察gratefully accepting his proposal。

Richard had received a similar letter察 and had made a similar
response。 He had seen Mr Jarndyce once察but only once察five years
ago察 at Winchester school。 He had told Ada察 when they were
leaning on the screen before the fire where I found them察that he
recollected him as ^a bluff察 rosy fellow。 ̄ This was the utmost
description Ada could give me。
It set me thinking so察that when Ada was asleep察I still remained
before the fire察wondering and wondering about Bleak House察and
wondering and wondering that yesterday morning should seem s
