occasion!your friend is no fool。 What¨s that拭院

^It¨s eleven o¨clock striking by the bell of Saint Paul¨s。 Listen察

and you¨ll hear all the bells in the city jangling。 ̄

Both sit silent察 listening to the metal voices察 near and distant察

resounding from towers of various heights察in tones more various

than their situations。 When these at length cease察all seems more

mysterious and quiet than before。 One disagreeable result of

whispering is察 that it seems to evoke an atmosphere of silence察

haunted by the ghosts of sound!strange cracks and tickings察the

rustling of garments that have no substance in them察and the tread

of dreadful feet察that would leave no mark on the sea´sand or the

winter snow。 So sensitive the two friends happen to be察that the air

is full of these phantoms察and the two look over their shoulders by

one consent察to see that the door is shut。

^Yes察 Tony拭院 says Mr Guppy察 drawing nearer to the fire察 and

biting his unsteady thumbnail。 ^You were going to say察thirdly拭院

^It¨s far from a pleasant thing to be plotting about a dead man

in the room where he died察especially when you happen to live in

it。 ̄

^But we are plotting nothing against him察Tony。 ̄

^May be not察still I don¨t like it。 Live here by yourself察and see

how you like it。 ̄

^As to dead men察 Tony察院 proceeds Mr Guppy察 evading this

proposal察 there have been dead men in most rooms。 ̄

^I know there have察 but in most rooms you let them alone察

and!and they let you alone察院Tony answers。

The two look at each other again。 Mr Guppy makes a hurried

remark to the effect that they may be doing the deceased a service察

that he hopes so。 There is an oppressive blank察 until Mr Weevle察

by stirring the fire suddenly察makes Mr Guppy start as if his heart

had been stirred instead。

^Fah Here¨s more of this hateful soot hanging about察院says he。

^Let us open the window a bit and get a mouthful of air。 It¨s too

close。 ̄

He raises the sash察and they both rest on the window´sill察half in

and half out of the room。 The neighbouring houses are too near察to

admit of their seeing any sky without craning their necks and

looking up察but lights in frowsy windows here and there察and the

rolling of distant carriages察and the new expression that there is of

the stir of men察they find to be comfortable。 Mr Guppy察noiselessly

tapping on the window´sill察 resumes his whispering in quite a

light´comedy tone。

^By´the´bye察 Tony察 don¨t forget old Smallweed察院 meaning the

Younger of that name。 ^I have not let him into this察 you know。

That grandfather of his is too keen by half。 It runs in the family。 ̄

^I remember察院 says Tony。 ^I am up to all that ̄ ^And as to

Krook察院resumes Mr Guppy。 ^Now察do you suppose he really has

got hold of any other papers of importance察as he has boasted to

you察since you have been such allies拭院

    Tony shakes his head。 ^I don¨t know。 Can¨t imagine。 If we get

through this business without rousing his suspicions察 I shall be

better informed no doubt。 How can I know without seeing them察

when he don¨t know himself拭He is always spelling out words from

them察 and chalking them over the table and the shop´wall察 and

asking what this is察 and what that is察 but his whole stock察 from

beginning to end察may easily be the waste paper he bought it as察

for anything I can say。 It¨s a monomania with him察to think he is

possessed of documents。 He has been going to learn to read them

this last quarter of a century察 I should judge察 from what he tells

me。 ̄

^How did he first come by that idea察 though拭 that¨s the

question察院 Mr Guppy suggests with one eye shut察 after a little

forensic meditation。 ^He may have found papers in some thing he

bought察where papers were not supposed to be察and may have got

it into his shrewd head察 from the manner and place of their

concealment察that they are worth something。 ̄

^Or he may have been taken in察in some pretended bargain。 Or

he may have been muddled altogether察by long staring at whatever

he has got察 and by drink察 and by hanging about the Lord

Chancellor¨s court and hearing of documents for ever察院returns Mr

Weevle。

Mr Guppy sitting on the window´sill察 nodding his head and

balancing all these possibilities in his mind察continues thoughtfully

to tap it察and clasp it察and measure it with his hand察until he hastily

draws his hand away。

^What察 in the Devil¨s name察院 he says察 is this Look at my

fingers 院

A thick察 yellow liquor defiles them察 which is offensive to the

touch and sight察 and more offensive to the smell。 A stagnant察

sickening oil察 with some natural repulsion in it that makes them

both shudder。

^What have you been doing here拭What have you been pouring

out of window拭院

^I pouring out of window Nothing察I swear Never察since I have

been here 院cries the lodger。

And yet look here!and look here When he brings the candle察

here察from the corner of the window´sill察it slowly drips察and creeps

away down the bricks察here察lies in a little thick nauseous pool。

^This is a horrible house察院 says Mr Guppy察 shutting down the

window。 ^Give me some water察or I shall cut my hand off。 ̄

He so washes察 and rubs察 and scrubs察 and smells and washes察

that he has not long restored himself with a glass of brandy察and

stood silently before the fire察when Saint Paul¨s bell strikes twelve察

heights in the dark air察and in their many tones。 When all is quiet

again察the lodger says此

^It¨s the appointed time at last。 Shall I go拭院

Mr Guppy nods察and gives him a ^lucky touch ̄ on the back察but

not with the washed hand察though it is his right hand。

He goes downstairs察 and Mr Guppy tries to compose himself察

before the fire察 for waiting a long time。 But in no more than a

minute or two the stairs creak察and Tony comes swiftly back。

    ^Have you got them拭院

    ^Got them No。 The old man¨s not there。 ̄

He has been so horribly frightened in the short interval察that his

terror seizes the other察who makes a rush at him察and asks loudly察

^What¨s the matter拭院

^I couldn¨t make him hear察 and I softly opened the door and
