done without him察 I am afraid to think察 for察 all the company
despising the bride and bridegroom察and old Mr Turveydrop!and
old Mr Turveydrop察 in virtue of his Deportment察 considering
himself vastly superior to all the company!it was a very
unpromising case。
At last the time came when poor Caddy was to go察and when all
her property was packed on the hired coach and pair that was to
take her and her husband to Gravesend。 It affected us to see
Caddy clinging察then察to her deplorable home察and hanging on her
mother¨s neck with the greatest tenderness。
^I am very sorry I couldn¨t go on writing from dictation察 Ma察院
sobbed Caddy。 ^I hope you forgive me now拭院
^O Caddy察Caddy 院said Mrs Jellyby察 I have told you over and
over again that I have engaged a boy察and there¨s an end of it。 ̄
^You are sure you are not the least angry with me察Ma拭Say you
are sure before I go away察Ma拭院
^You foolish Caddy察院returned Mrs Jellyby察 do I look angry察or
have I inclination to be angry察or time to be angry拭How can you拭院
^Take a little care of Pa while I am gone察mama 院
Mrs Jellyby positively laughed at the fancy。 ^You romantic

child察院 said she察 lightly patting Caddy¨s back。 ^Go along。 I am
excellent friends with you。 Now察 good bye察 Caddy察 and be very
happy 院
Then Caddy hung upon her father察 and nursed his cheek
against hers as if he were some poor dull child in pain。 All this
took place in the hall。 Her father released her察took out his pocket´
handkerchief察and sat down on the stairs with his head against the
walls。 I hope he found some consolation in walls。 I almost think he
did。
And then Prince took her arm in his察 and turned with great
emotion and respect to his father察 whose Deportment at that
moment was overwhelming。
^Thank you over and over again察 father 院 said Prince察 kissing
his hand。 ^I am very grateful for all your kindness and
consideration regarding our marriage察and so察I can assure you察is
Caddy。 ̄
^Very察院sobbed Caddy。 ^Ve´ry 院
^My dear son察院said Mr Turveydrop察 and dear daughter察I have
done my duty。 If the spirit of a sainted Wooman hovers above us察
and looks down on the occasion察that察and your constant affection察
will be my recompense。 You will not fail in your duty察my son and
daughter察I believe拭院
^Dear father察never 院cried Prince。
^Never察never察dear Mr Turveydrop 院said Caddy。
^This察院 returned Mr Turveydrop察 is as it should be。 My
children察 my home is yours察my heart is yours察 my all is yours。 I
will never leave you察nothing but Death shall part us。 My dear son察
you contemplate an absence of a week察I think拭院
^A week察dear father。 We shall return home this day week。 ̄

^My dear child察院said Mr Turveydrop察 let me察even under the
present exceptional circumstances察recommend strict punctuality。
It is highly important to keep the connection together察 and
schools察if at all neglected察are apt to take offence。 ̄
^This day week察father察we shall be sure to be home to dinner。 ̄
^Good 院 said Mr Turveydrop。 ^You will find fires察 my dear
Caroline察 in your own room察 and dinner prepared in my
apartment。 Yes察 yes察 Prince 院 anticipating some self´denying
objection on his son¨s part with a great air。 ^You and our Caroline
will be strange in the upper part of the premises察 and will察
therefore察dine that day in my apartment。 Now察bless ye 院
They drove away察and whether I wondered most at Mrs Jellyby察
or at Mr Turveydrop察I did not know。 Ada and my Guardian were
in the same condition when we came to talk it over。 But before we
drove away察 too察 I received a most unexpected and eloquent
compliment from Mr Jellyby。 He came up to me in the hall察 took
both my hands察 pressed them earnestly察 and opened his mouth
twice。 I was so sure of his meaning察that I said察quite flurried察 You
are very welcome察sir。 Pray don¨t mention it 院
^I hope this marriage is for the best察 Guardian拭院said I察 when
we three were on our road home。
^I hope it is察little woman。 Patience。 We shall see。 ̄
^Is the wind in the East today拭院I ventured to ask him。
He laughed heartily察and answered ^No。 ̄
^But it must have been this morning察I think察院said I。
He answered ^No察院 again察 and this time my dear girl
confidently answered ^No察院too察and shook the lovely head which察
with its blooming flowers against the golden hair察was like the very
Spring。 ^Much you know of East winds察my ugly darling察院 said I察

kissing her in my admiration!I couldn¨t help it。
Well It was only their love for me察I know very well察and it is a
long time ago。 I must write it察even if I rub it out again察because it
gives me so much pleasure。 They said there could be no East
winds where Somebody was察 they said that wherever Dame
Durden went察there was sunshine and summer air。

Chapter 31
Nurse And Patient
had not been at home again many days察when one evening I
went upstairs into my own room to take a peep over Charley¨s
Ishoulder察and see how she was getting on with her copy´book。
Writing was a trying business to Charley察who seemed to have no
natural power over a pen察but in whose hand every pen appeared
to become perversely animated察and to go wrong and crooked察and
to stop察and splash察and sidle into corners察like a saddle´donkey。 It
was very odd察to see what old letters Charley¨s young hand made察
they察 so wrinkled察 and shrivelled察 and tottering察 it察 so plump and
round。 Yet Charley was uncommonly expert at other things察and
had as nimble little fingers as I ever watched。
^Well察 Charley察院 said I察 looking over a copy of the letter O in
which it was represented as square察triangular察pear´shaped察 and
collapsed in all kinds of ways察 we are improving。 If we only get to
make it round察we shall be perfect察Charley。 ̄
Then I made one察and Charley made one察and the pen wouldn¨t
join Charley¨s neatly察but twisted it up into a knot。
^Never mind察Charley。 We shall do it in time。 ̄
Charley laid down her pen察the copy being finished察opened and
shut her cramped little hand察 looked gravely at the page察 half in
pride and half in doubt察and got up察and dropped me a curtsey。
^Thank you察 miss。 If you please察 miss察 did you know a poor
person of the name of Jenny
