    ^With a couple of sticks。 When! ̄

^When you stops察you know察院cries Phil察putting down his cup

and saucer察 and hastily removing his plate from his knees察 and

says to me察 What察comrade You have been in the wars I didn¨t

say much to you察commander察then察for I was took by surprise察that

a person so strong and healthy and bold as you was察should stop to

speak to such a limping bag of bones as I was。 But you says to me察

says you察 delivering it out of your chest as hearty as possible察 so

that it was like a glass of something hot察 What accident have you

met with拭 You have been badly hurt。 What¨s amiss察 old boy拭

Cheer up察and tell us about it Cheer up I was cheered already I

says more to me察 and here I am察 commander Here I am察

commander 院 cries Phil察 who has started from his chair and

unaccountably begun to sidle away。 ^If a mark¨s wanted察 or if it

can¨t spoil my beauty。 I¨m all right。 Come on If they want a man to

Cornwall察 Devonshire察 or Lancashire察 let ¨em throw me。 They

won¨t hurt me。 I have been throwed察all sorts of styles察all my life 院

With this unexpected speech察 energetically delivered察 and

accompanied by action illustrative of the various exercises

referred to察Phil Squod shoulders his way round three sides of the

gallery察and abruptly tacking off at his commander察makes a butt

at him with his head察intended to express devotion to his service。

He then begins to clear away the breakfast。

Mr George察after laughing cheerfully察and clapping him on the

shoulder察 assists in these arrangements察 and helps to get the

gallery into business order。 That done察 he takes a turn at the

dumbbells察and afterwards weighing himself察and opining that he

is getting ^too fleshy察院 engages with great gravity in solitary

broadsword practice。 Meanwhile察 Phil has fallen to work at his

usual table察where he screws and unscrews察and cleans察and files察

and whistles into small apertures察and blackens himself more and

more察and seems to do and undo everything that can be done and

undone about a gun。

Master and man are at length disturbed by footsteps in the

passage察where they make an unusual sound察denoting the arrival

of unusual company。 These steps察advancing nearer and nearer to

the gallery察bring into it a group察at first sight scarcely reconcilable

with any day in the year but the fifth of November。

It consists of a limp and ugly figure carried in a chair by two

bearers察and attended by a lean female with a face like a pinched

mask察 who might be expected immediately to recite the popular

verses察commemorative of the time when they did contrive to blow

Old England up alive察but for keeping her lips tightly and defiantly

closed as the chair is put down。 At which point察 the figure in it

attended by his grand´daughter Judy as bodyguard。

^Humph She bears it calmly 院mutters Mr George。

^So we got a hackney cab察and put a chair in it察and just round

the corner they lifted me out of the cab and into the chair察 and

His closing exclamation is jerked out of the venerable
