                      Mrs Snagsby Sees It All

here is disquietude in Cook¨s Court察Cursitor Street。 Black

suspicion hides in that peaceful region。 The mass of

T

Cook¨s Courtiers are in their usual state of mind察no better

and no worse察but察 Mr Snagsby is changed察 and his little woman

knows it。

For察 Tom´all´Alone¨s and Lincoln¨s Inn Fields persist in

harnessing themselves察 a pair of ungovernable coursers察 to the

chariot of Mr Snagsby¨s imagination察and Mr Bucket drives察 and

the passengers are Jo and Mr Tulkinghorn察 and the complete

equipage whirls through the Law Stationery business at wild

speed察all round the clock。 Even in the little front kitchen where

the family meals are taken察it rattles away at a smoking pace from

the dinner table察when Mr Snagsby pauses in carving the first slice

of the leg of mutton baked with potatoes察and stares at the kitchen

wall。

Mr Snagsby can not make out what it is that he has had to do

with。 Something is wrong察somewhere察but what something察what

may come of it察to whom察when察and from which unthought´of and

unheard´of quarter察 is the puzzle of his life。 His remote

impressions of the robes and coronets察the stars and garters察that

sparkle through the surface´dust of Mr Tulkinghorn¨s chambers察

his veneration for the mysteries presided over by that best and

closest of his customers察whom all the Inns of Court察and Chancery

Lane察 and all the legal neighbourhood agree to hold in awe察 his

remembrance of Detective Mr Bucket with his forefinger察and his

confidential manner impossible to be evaded or declined察

persuade him that he is a party to some dangerous secret察without

knowing what it is。 And it is the fearful peculiarity of this

condition察that察at any hour of his daily life察at any opening of the

shop´door察at any pull of the bell察at any entrance of a messenger察

or any delivery of a letter察 the secret may take air and fire察

explode察and blow up!Mr Bucket only knows whom。

For which reason察 whenever a man unknown comes into the

shop as many men unknown do察and says察 Is Mr Snagsby in拭院

or words to that innocent effect察Mr Snagsby¨s heart knocks hard

at his guilty breast。 He undergoes so much from such inquiries察

that when they are made by boys he revenges himself by flipping

at their ears over the counter察 and asking the young dogs what

they meant by it察 and why they can¨t speak out at once拭 More

impracticable men and boys persist in walking into Mr Snagsby¨s

sleep察 and terrifying him with unaccountable questions察 so that

often察 when the cock at the little dairy in Cursitor Street breaks

out in his usual absurd way about the morning察Mr Snagsby finds

himself in a crisis of nightmare察with his little woman shaking him察

and saying察 What¨s the matter with the man 院

The little woman herself is not the least item in his difficulty。 To

know that he is always keeping a secret from her察 that he has察

under all circumstances察to conceal and hold fast a tender double

tooth察which her sharpness is ever ready to twist out of his head察

gives Mr Snagsby察in her dentistical presence察much of the air of a

dog who has a reservation from his master察and will look anywhere

rather than meet his eye。

These various signs and tokens察 marked by the little woman察

are not lost upon her。 They impel her to say察 Snagsby has

something on his mind 院 And thus suspicion gets into Cook¨s

Court察 Cursitor Street。 From suspicion to jealousy察 Mrs Snagsby

finds the road as natural and short as from Cook¨s Court to

Chancery Lane。 And thus jealousy gets into Cook¨s Court察Cursitor

Street。 Once there and it was always lurking thereabout察 it is

very active and nimble in Mrs Snagsby¨s breast!prompting her to

nocturnal examinations of Mr Snagsby¨s pockets察 to secret

perusals of Mr Snagsby¨s letters察to private researches in the Day

Book and Ledger察 till察 cash´box察 and iron safe察 to watchings at

windows察 listenings behind doors察 and a general putting of this

and that together by the wrong end。

Mrs Snagsby is so perpetually on the alert察 that the house

becomes ghostly with creaking boards and rustling garments。 The

¨prentices think somebody may have been murdered there察 in

bygone times。 Guster holds certain loose atoms of an idea picked

up at Tooting察 where they were found floating among the

orphans察 that there is buried money underneath the cellar察

guarded by an old man with a white beard察who cannot get out for

seven thousand years察 because he said the Lord¨s Prayer

backwards。

^Who was Nimrod拭院 Mrs Snagsby repeatedly inquires of

herself。 ^Who was that lady!that creature拭And who is that boy拭院

Now察Nimrod being as dead as the mighty hunter whose name Mrs

Snagsby has appropriated察 and the lady being unproducible察 she

directs her mental eye察for the present察with redoubled vigilance察

to the boy。 ^And who察院quoth Mrs Snagsby察for the thousand and

first time察 is that boy拭Who is that ! 院And there Mrs Snagsby is

seized with an inspiration。

wouldn¨t have察 of course。 Naturally he wouldn¨t under those

contagious circumstances。 He was invited and appointed by Mr
