kissed me。 In short察she had such a natural察captivating察 winning
manner察that in a few minutes we were sitting in the window´seat察
with the light of the fire upon us察 talking together察 as free and
happy as could be。
What a load off my mind It was so delightful to know that she
could confide in me察 and like me It was so good of her察 and so
encouraging to me
The young gentleman was her distant cousin察she told me察and
his name Richard Carstone。 He was a handsome youth察 with an
ingenuous face察 and a most engaging laugh察 and after she had
called him up to where we sat察he stood by us察in the light of the

fire too察talking gaily察like a light´hearted boy。 He was very young察
not more than nineteen then察 if quite so much察 but nearly two
years older than she was。 They were both orphans察and what was
very unexpected and curious to me had never met before that
day。 Our all three coming together for the first time察 in such an
unusual place察was a thing to talk about察 and we talked about it察
and the fire察which had left off roaring察winked its red eyes at us!
as Richard said!like a drowsy old Chancery lion。
We conversed in a low tone察because a full´dressed gentleman
in a bag wig察frequently came in and out察and when he did so察we
could hear a drawling sound in the distance察 which he said was
one of the counsel in our case addressing the Lord Chancellor。 He
told Mr Kenge that the Chancellor would be up in five minutes察
and presently we heard a bustle and a tread of feet察and Mr Kenge
said that the court had risen察 and his lordship was in the next
room。
The gentleman in the bag wig opened the door almost directly察
and requested Mr Kenge to come in。 Upon that察we all went into
the next room察Mr Kenge first察with my darling!it is so natural to
me now察that I can¨t help writing it察and there察plainly dressed in
black察and sitting in an armchair at a table near the fire察 was his
lordship察 whose robe察 trimmed with beautiful gold lace察 was
thrown upon another chair。 He gave us a searching look as we
entered察but his manner was both courtly and kind。
The gentleman in the bag wig laid bundles of papers on his
lordship¨s table察and his lordship silently selected one察and turned
over the leaves。
^Miss Clare察院said the Lord Chancellor。 ^Miss Ada Clare拭院

down near him。 That he admired her察and was interested by her察
even I could see in a moment。 It touched me察 that the home of
such a beautiful young creature should be represented by that dry
official place。 The Lord High Chancellor察at his best察appeared so
poor a substitute for the love and pride of parents。
^The Jarndyce in question察院 said the Lord Chancellor察 still
turning over leaves察 is Jarndyce of Bleak House。 ̄
^Jarndyce of Bleak House察my lord察院said Mr Kenge。
^A dreary name察院said the Lord Chancellor。
^But not a dreary place察at present察my lord察院said Mr Kenge。
^And Bleak House察院said his lordship察 is in! ̄
^Hertfordshire察my lord。 ̄
^Mr Jarndyce of Bleak House is not married拭院 said his
lordship。
^He is not察my lord察院said Mr Kenge。
A pause。
^Young Mr Richard Carstone is present拭院 said the Lord
Chancellor察glancing towards him。
Richard bowed and stepped forward。
^Hum 院said the Lord Chancellor察turning over more leaves。
^Mr Jarndyce of Bleak House察my lord察院Mr Kenge observed in
a low voice察 if I may venture to remind your lordship察provides a
suitable companion for! ̄
^For Mr Richard Carstone拭院I thought but I am not quite sure
I heard his lordship say察in an equally low voice察and with a smile。
^For Miss Ada Clare。 This is the young lady。 Miss Summerson。 ̄
His lordship gave me an indulgent look察 and acknowledged my
curtsey very graciously。
^Miss Summerson is not related to any party in the cause察 I

think拭院
^No察my lord。 ̄
Mr Kenge leant over before it was quite said察 and whispered。
His lordship察with his eyes upon his papers察listened察nodded twice
or thrice察 turned over more leaves察and did not look towards me
again察until we were going away。
Mr Kenge now retired察and Richard with him察to where I was察
near the door察 leaving my pet it is so natural to me that again I
can¨t help it。 sitting near the Lord Chancellor察 with whom his
lordship spoke a little apart察asking her察as she told me afterwards察
whether she had well reflected on the proposed arrangement察and
if she thought she would be happy under the roof of Mr Jarndyce
of Bleak House察 and why she thought so拭 Presently he rose
courteously察and released her察and then he spoke for a minute or
two with Richard Carstone察 not seated察 but standing察 and
altogether with more ease and less ceremony!as if he still knew察
though he was Lord Chancellor察how to go straight to the candour
of a boy。
^Very well 院said his lordship aloud。 ^I shall make the order。 Mr
Jarndyce of Bleak House has chosen察so far as I may judge察院and
this was when he looked at me察 a very good companion for the
young lady察 and the arrangement altogether seems the best of
which the circumstances admit。 ̄
He dismissed us pleasantly察 and we all went out察 very much
obliged to him for being so affable and polite察 by which he had
certainly lost no dignity察but seemed to us to have gained some。
When we got under the colonnade察Mr Kenge remembered that
he must go back for a moment to ask a question察and left us in the
fog察with the Lord Chancellor¨s carriage and servants waiting for

him to come out。
^Well 院said Richard Carstone察 that¨s over And where do we
go next察Miss Summerson拭院
^Don¨t you know拭院I said。
^Not in the least察院said he。
^And don¨t you know察my love拭院I asked Ada。
^No 院said she。 ^Don¨t you拭院
^Not at all 院said I。
We looked at one another察 half laughing at our being like the
children in the wood察 when a curious little old woman in a
squeezed bonnet察 and carrying a reticule察 came curtseying and
smiling up to us察with an air of great ceremony。
^O 院said she。 ^The wards in Jarndyce Ve´ry happy察I am sure察
to have the honour It is a good omen for youth察 and hope察 and
beauty察 when they
