and to conquer what was amiss in himself察and to acquire the very

soul of decision察that he made my heart ache keenly察sorely。 For察I

thought how would this end察 how could this end察 when so soon

and so surely all his manly qualities were touched by the fatal

blight that ruined everything it rested on

I spoke to Richard with all the earnestness I felt察 and all the

hope I could not quite feel then察and implored him察for Ada¨s sake察

not to put any trust in Chancery。 To all I said察 Richard readily

assented察 riding over the Court and everything else in his easy

way察and drawing the brightest pictures of the character he was to

settle into!alas察when the grievous suit should loose its hold upon

him We had a long talk察 but it always came back to that察 in

substance。

At last察 we came to Soho Square察 where Caddy Jellyby had

appointed to wait for me察as a quiet place in the neighbourhood of

Newman´street。 Caddy was in the garden in the centre and

hurried out as soon as I appeared。 After a few cheerful words察

Richard left us together。

^Prince has a pupil over the way察Esther察院said Caddy察 and got

the key for us。 So察if you will walk round and round here with me察

we can lock ourselves in察 and I can tell you comfortably what I

wanted to see your dear good face about。 ̄

    ^Very well察 my dear察院 said I。 ^Nothing could be better。 ̄ So

Caddy察 after affectionately squeezing the dear good face as she

called it察locked the gate察and took my arm察and we began to walk

round the garden very cosily。

^You see察Esther察院said Caddy察who thoroughly enjoyed a little

confidence察 after you spoke to me about its being wrong to marry

without Ma¨s knowledge察 or even to keep Ma long in the dark

respecting our engagement!though I don¨t believe Ma cares

much for me察 I must say!I thought it right to mention your

opinions to Prince。 In the first place察 because I want to profit by

everything you tell me察and in the second place察because I have no

secrets from Prince。 ̄

    ^I hope he approved察Caddy拭院

^O察 my dear I assure you he would approve of anything you

could say。 You have no idea what an opinion he has of you 院

    ^Indeed拭院

^Esther察 it¨s enough to make anybody but me jealous察院 said

Caddy察 laughing and shaking her head察 but it only makes me

joyful察for you are the first friend I ever had察and the best friend I

ever can have察and nobody can respect and love you too much to

please me。 ̄

^Upon my word察 Caddy察院 said I察 you are in the general

conspiracy to keep me in a good humour。 Well察my dear拭院

^Well I am going to tell you察院 replied Caddy察 crossing her

hands confidentially upon my arm。 ^So we talked a good deal

about it察and so I said to Prince察 Prince察as Miss Summerson!¨ ̄

    ^I hope you didn¨t say `Miss Summerson拭 ̄

^No。 I didn¨t 院 cried Caddy察 greatly pleased察 and with the

brightest of faces。 ^I said察 Esther。¨ I said to Prince察 As Esther is

decidedly of that opinion察Prince察and has expressed it to me察and

always hints it when she writes those kind notes察which you are so

fond of hearing me read to you察I am prepared to disclose the truth

to Ma whenever you think proper。 And I think察Prince察 said I察 that

Esther thinks that I should be in a better察 and truer察 and more

honourable position altogether察if you did the same to your Papa。¨ ̄

    ^Yes察my dear察院said I。 ^Esther certainly does think so。 ̄

^So I was right察you see 院exclaimed Caddy。 ^Well this troubled

Prince a good deal察not because he had the least doubt about it察

but he is so considerate of the feelings of old Mr Turveydrop察and

he had his apprehensions that old Mr Turveydrop might break his

heart察or faint away察or be very much overcome in some affecting

manner or other察if he made such an announcement。 He feared old

Mr Turveydrop might consider it undutiful察and might receive too

great a shock。 For察 old Mr Turveydrop¨s deportment is very

beautiful you know察 Esther察院added Caddy察 and his feelings are

extremely sensitive。 ̄

    ^Are they察my dear拭院

^O察 extremely sensitive。 Prince says so。 Now察 this has caused

my darling child!I didn¨t mean to use the expression to you察

Esther察院Caddy apologised察her face suffused with blushes察 but I

generally call Prince my darling child。 ̄

I laughed察and Caddy laughed and blushed察and went on。

    ^This has caused him察Esther! ̄

    ^Caused whom察my dear拭院

^O you tiresome thing 院said Caddy察laughing察 with her pretty

face on fire。 ^My darling child察 if you insist upon it This has察

caused him weeks of uneasiness察 and has made him delay察 from

day to day察in a very anxious manner。 At last he said to me察 Caddy察

if Miss Summerson察who is a great favourite with my father察could

be prevailed upon to be present when I broke the subject察I think I

could do it。¨ So I promised I would ask you。 And I made up my

mind察 besides察院 said Caddy察 looking at me hopefully but timidly察

^that if you consented察 I would ask you afterwards to come with

me to Ma。 This is what I meant察when I said in my note that I had a

great favour and a great assistance to beg of you。 And if you

thought you could grant it察 Esther察 we should both be very

grateful。 ̄

^Let me see察 Caddy察院said I察 pretending to consider。 ^Really I

think I could do a greater thing than that察 if the need were

pressing。 I am at your service and the darling child¨s察 my dear察

whenever you like。 ̄

Caddy was quite transported by this reply of mine察 being察 I

believe察as susceptible to the least kindness or encouragement as

any tender heart that ever beat in this world察 and after another

turn or two round the garden察during which she put on an entirely

new pair of gloves察 and made herself as resplendent as possible

that she might do no avoidable discredit to the Master of

Deportment察we went to Newman Street direct。

Prince was teaching察of course。 We found him engaged with a
