me a good turn。 Think of the children that your business lays with

often and often察and that you see grow up 院

^Well察 well 院 says Mr Bucket察 you train him respectable察 and

he¨ll be a comfort to you察and look after you in your old age察 you

know。 ̄

^I mean to try hard察院she answers察wiping her eyes。 ^But I have

been a thinking察 being overtired tonight察 and not well with the

ague察of all the many things that¨ll come in his way。 My master will

be against it察and he¨ll be beat察and see me beat察and made to fear

his home察 and perhaps to stray wild。 If I work for him ever so

much and ever so hard察there¨s no one to help me察and if he should

be turned bad察 spite of all I could do察 and the time should come

when I should sit by him in his sleep察made hard and changed察an¨t

it likely I should think of him as he lies in my lap now察and wish he

had died as Jenny¨s child died 院

    ^There察 there 院 says Jenny。 ^Liz察 you¨re tired and ill。 Let me

take him。 ̄

In doing so察 she displaces the mother¨s dress察 but quickly

readjusts it over the wounded and bruised bosom where the baby

has been lying。

^It¨s my dead child察院says Jenny察walking up and down as she

nurses察 that makes me love this child so dear察 and it¨s my dead

child that makes her love it so dear too察 as even to think of its

being taken away from her now。 While she thinks that察 I think

what fortune would I give to have my darling back。 But we mean

the same thing察if we knew how to say it察us two mothers does in

our poor hearts 院

As Mr Snagsby blows his nose察 and coughs his cough of

sympathy察a step is heard without。 Mr Bucket throws his light into

the doorway察and says to Mr Snagsby察 Now察 what do you say to

Toughy拭Will he do拭院

    ^That¨s Jo察院says Mr Snagsby。

Jo stands amazed in the disc of light察like a ragged figure in a

magic´lanthorn察 trembling to think that he has offended against

the law in not having moved on far enough。 Mr Snagsby察however察

giving him the consolatory assurance察 It¨s only a job you will be

paid for察 Jo察院 he recovers察 and察 on being taken outside by Mr

Bucket for a little private confabulation察tells his tale satisfactorily察

though out of breath。

^I have squared it with the lad察院 says Mr Bucket察 returning察

^and it¨s all right。 Now察Mr Snagsby察we¨re ready for you。 ̄

First察Jo has to complete his errand of good´nature by handing

over the physic he has been to get察 which he delivers with the

laconic verbal direction that ^it¨s to be took all d¨rectly。 ̄ Secondly察

Mr Snagsby has to lay upon the table half´a´crown察 his usual

panacea for an immense variety of afflictions。 Thirdly察Mr Bucket

has to take Jo by the arm a little above the elbow and walk him on

before him此without which observance察neither the Tough Subject

nor any other subject could be professionally conducted to

Lincoln¨s Inn Fields。 These arrangements completed察they give the

women good night察 and come out once more into black and foul

Tom´all´Alone¨s。

By the noisome ways through which they descended into that

pit察 they gradually emerge from it察 the crowd flitting察 and

whistling察and skulking about them察until they come to the verge察

where restoration of the bull¨s´eyes is made to Darby。 Here察 the

crowd like a concourse of imprisoned demons察turns back察yelling察

and is seen no more。 Through the clearer and fresher streets察

never so clear and fresh to Mr Snagsby¨s mind as now察they walk

and ride察until they come to Mr Tulkinghorn¨s gate。

As they ascend the dim stairs Mr Tulkinghorn¨s chambers

being on the first floor察Mr Bucket mentions that he has the key of

the outer door in his pocket察and that there is no need to ring。 For

a man so expert in most things of that kind察Bucket takes time to

open the door察 and makes some noise too。 It may be that he

sounds a note of preparation。

Howbeit察 they come at last into the hall察 where a lamp is

burning察 and so into Mr Tulkinghorn¨s usual room!the room

where he drank his old wine tonight。 He is not there察but his two

old´fashioned candlesticks are察and the room is tolerably light。

Mr Bucket察 still having his professional hold of Jo察 and

appearing to Mr Snagsby to possess an unlimited number of eyes察

makes a little way into this room察when Jo starts and stops。

    ^What¨s the matter拭院says Bucket in a whisper。

    ^There she is 院cries Jo。

    ^Who 院

    ^The lady 院

A female figure察closely veiled察stands in the middle of the room察

where the light falls upon it。 It is quite still察and silent。 The front of

the figure is towards them察but it takes no notice of their entrance察

and remains like a statue。

^Now察 tell me察院says Bucket aloud察 how you know that to be

the lady。 ̄

^I know the wale察院replies Jo察staring察 and the bonnet察and the

gownd。 ̄

^Be quite sure of what you say察 Tough察院 returns Bucket察

narrowly observant of him。 ^Look again。 ̄

^I am a´looking as hard as ever I can look察院 says Jo察 with

starting eyes察 and that there¨s the wale察 the bonnet察 and the

gownd。 ̄

^What about those rings you told me of拭院asks Bucket。

^A sparkling all over here察院says Jo察rubbing the fingers of his

left hand on the knuckles of his right察without taking his eyes from

the figure。

The figure removes the right hand glove察and shows the hand。

^Now察 what do you say to that拭院 asks Bucket。 Jo shakes his

head。 ^Not rings a bit like them。 Not a hand like that。 ̄

^What are you talking of拭院 says Bucket察 evidently pleased

though察and well pleased too。

^Hand was a deal whiter察a deal delicater and a deal smaller察院

returns Jo。

^Why察you¨ll tell me I¨m my own mother next察院says Mr Bucket。

^Do you recollect the lady¨s voice拭院

    ^I think I does察院says Jo。

The figure speaks。 ^Was it at all like this。 I will speak as long as

you like if you are not sure。 Was it this voice察 or at all like this

voice拭院

Jo looks aghast at Mr Bucket。 ^Not a bit 院

^Then察 what察院 retorts that worthy察 pointing to the figure察 did

you say it was the lady for拭院

^Cos察院says Jo察with a perplexed stare察but without being at all
