Mr George sits察with his arms folded察consuming the family and

the parlour察 while Grandfather Smallweed is assisted by Judy to

two black leathern cases out of a locked bureau察in one of which he

secures the document he has just received察 and from the other

takes another similar document which he hands to Mr George察

who twists it up for a pipe´light。 As the old man inspects察through

his glasses察 every up´stroke and downstroke of both documents察

before he releases them from their leathern prison察 and as he

counts the money three times over察and requires Judy to say every

word she utters at least twice察and is as tremulously slow of speech

and action as it is possible to be察 this business is a long time in

progress。 When it is quite concluded察 and not before察 he

disengages his ravenous eyes and fingers from it察and answers Mr

George¨s last remark by saying察 Afraid to order the pipe拭We are

not so mercenary as that察sir。 Judy察see directly to the pipe and the

glass of cold brandy and water for Mr George。 ̄

The sportive twins察who have been looking straight before them

all this time察 except when they have been engrossed by the

leathern cases察retire together察 generally disdainful of the visitor察

but leaving him to the old man察as two young cubs might leave a

traveller to the parental bear。

^And there you sit察 I suppose察 all the day long察 eh 院 says Mr

George察with folded arms。

^Just so察just so察院the old man nods。

^And don¨t you occupy yourself at all拭院

^I watch the fire!and the boiling and the roasting! ̄

^When there is any察院says Mr George察with great expression。

    ^Just so。 When there is any。 ̄

^Don¨t you read察and get read to拭院

The old man shakes his head with sharp sly triumph。 ^No察no。

We have never been readers in our family。 It don¨t pay。 Stuff。

Idleness。 Folly。 No察no 院

^There¨s not much to choose between your two states察院says the

visitor察in a key too low for the old man¨s dull hearing察as he looks

from him to the old woman and back again。 ^I say 院 in a louder

voice。

    ^I hear you。 ̄

^You¨ll sell me up at last I suppose察when I am a day in arrear。 ̄

^My dear friend 院cries Grandfather Smallweed察stretching out

both hands to embrace him。 ^Never Never察 my dear friend But

my friend in the city that I got to lend you the money!he might 院

^O you can¨t answer for him拭院 says Mr George察 finishing the

inquiry察in his lower key察with the words ^you lying old rascal 院

^My dear friend察he is not to be depended on。 I wouldn¨t trust

him。 He will have his bond察my dear friend。 ̄

^Devil doubt him察院says Mr George。 Charley appearing with a

tray察 on which are the pipe察 a small paper of tobacco察 and the

brandy and water察 he asks her察 How do you come here you

haven¨t got the family face。 ̄

^I goes out to work察sir察院returns Charley。

The trooper if trooper he be or have been takes her bonnet off察

with a light touch for so strong a hand察and pats her on the head。

^You give the house almost a wholesome look。 It wants a bit of

youth as much as it wants fresh air。 ̄ Then he dismisses her察lights

his pipe察and drinks to Mr Smallweed¨s friend in the city!the one

solitary flight of that esteemed old gentleman¨s imagination。

^So you think he might be hard upon me察eh拭院

^I think he might!I am afraid he would。 I have known him to

do it察院says Grandfather Smallweed察incautiously察 twenty times。 ̄

Incautiously察 because his stricken better´half察 who has been

dozing over the fire for some time察is instantly aroused and jabbers

^Twenty thousand pounds察 twenty twenty´pound notes in a

moneybox察 twenty guineas察 twenty million twenty per cent察

twenty! ̄ and is then cut short by the flying cushion察 which the

visitor察to whom the singular experiment appears to be a novelty察

snatches from her face as it crushes her in the usual manner。

    ^You¨re a brimstone idiot。 You¨re a scorpion!a brimstone

scorpion You¨re a sweltering toad。 You¨re a chattering clattering

broomstick witch察 that ought to be burnt 院 gasps the old man察

prostrate in his chair。 ^My dear friend察 will you shake me up a

little拭院

Mr George察who has been looking first at one of them and then

at the other察 as if he were demented察 takes his venerable

acquaintance by the throat on receiving this request察and dragging

him upright in his chair as easily as if he were a doll察appears in

two minds whether or no to shake all future power of cushioning

out of him察and shake him into his grave。 Resisting the temptation察

but agitating him violently enough to make his head roll like a

harlequin¨s察 he puts him smartly down in his chair again察 and

adjusts his skull´cap with such a rub察that the old man winks both

eyes for a minute afterwards。

^O Lord 院gasps Mr Smallweed。 That¨ll do。 Thank you察my dear

friend察that¨ll do。 O dear me察I¨m out of breath。 O Lord 院And Mr

Smallweed says it察not without evident apprehensions of his dear

friend察who still stands over him looming larger than ever。

The alarming presence察 however察 gradually subsides into its

chair察and falls to smoking in long puffs察consoling itself with the

philosophical reflection察 The name of your friend in the city

begins a D察comrade察and you¨re about right respecting the bond。 ̄

^Did you speak察Mr George拭院inquires the old man。

The trooper shakes his head察and leaning forward with his right

elbow on his right knee and his pipe supported in that hand察while

his other hand察resting on his left leg察squares his left elbow in a

martial manner察 continues to smoke。 Meanwhile he looks at Mr

Smallweed with grave attention察and now and then fans the cloud

of smoke away察in order that he may see him the more clearly。

^I take it察院he says察making just as much and as little change in

his position as will enable him to reach the glass to his lips察with a

round察full action察 that I am the only man alive or dead either察

that gets the value of a pipe out of you拭院

^Well 院returns the old man察 it¨s true that I don¨t see company察

Mr George察and that I don¨t treat。 I can¨t afford to it。 But as you察in

your pleasant way察made your pipe a condition! ̄

^Why察it¨s not for the value of it察that¨s no great thing。 It was a

fancy to get it out of you。 To have something in for my money。 ̄
