and some resentful opinion that it is time that he went。

^Now察 if everybody has done察院 says Judy察 completing her

preparations察 I¨ll have that girl in to her tea。 She would never

leave off察if she took it by herself in the kitchen。 ̄

Charley is accordingly introduced察 and察 under a heavy fire of

eyes察 sits down to her basin and a Druidical ruin of bread and

butter。 In the active superintendence of this young person察 Judy

Smallweed appears to attain a perfectly geological age察and to date

from the remotest periods。 Her systematic manner of flying at her

and pouncing on her察with or without pretence察whether or no察is

wonderful察evincing an accomplishment in the art of girl´driving察

seldom reached by the oldest practitioners。

^Now察 don¨t stare about you all the afternoon察院 cried Judy察

shaking her head and stamping her foot as she happens to catch

the glance which has been previously sounding the basin of tea察

^but take your victuals and get back to your work。 ̄

    ^Yes察miss察院says Charley。

^Don¨t say yes察院returns Miss Smallweed察 for I know what you

girls are。 Do it without saying it察and then I may begin to believe

you。 ̄

Charley swallows a great gulp of tea in token of submission察and

so disperses the Druidical ruins that Miss Smallweed charges her

not to gormandise察 which察 in you girls察院 she observes察 is

disgusting。 Charley might find some more difficulty in meeting her

views on the general subject of girls察but for a knock at the door。

^See who it is察and don¨t chew when you open it 院cries Judy。

The object of her attentions withdrawing for the purpose察Miss

Smallweed takes that opportunity of jumbling the remainder of

the bread and butter together察 and launching two or three dirty

teacups into the ebb´tide of the basin of tea察 as a hint that she

considers the eating and drinking terminated。

^Now Who is it察and what¨s wanted拭院says the snappish Judy。

It is one ^Mr George察院it appears。 Without other announcement

or ceremony察Mr George walks in。

    ^Whew 院says Mr George。 ^You are hot here。 Always a fire察eh拭

Well Perhaps you do right to get used to one。 ̄ Mr George makes

the latter remark to himself察 as he nods to Grandfather

Smallweed。

^Ho It¨s you 院 cries the old gentleman。 ^How de do拭 How de

do拭院

    ^Middling察院 replies Mr George察 taking a chair。 ^Your grand´

daughter I have had the honour of seeing before此 my service to

you察miss。 ̄

^This is my grandson察院 says Grandfather Smallweed。 ^You

ha¨n¨t seen him before。 He is in the law察and not much at home。 ̄

^My service to him察too He is like his sister。 He is very like his

sister。 He is devilish like his sister察院says Mr George察laying a great

and not altogether complimentary stress on his last adjective。

^And how does the world use you察 Mr George拭院 Grandfather

Smallweed inquires察slowly rubbing his legs。

    ^Pretty much as usual。 Like a football。 ̄

He is a swarthy browned man of fifty察 well made察 and good´

looking察with crisp dark hair察bright eyes察and a broad chest。 His

sinewy and powerful hands察 as sunburnt as his face察 have

evidently been used to a pretty rough life。 What is curious about

him is察 that he sits forward on his chair as if he were察 from long

habit察allowing space for some dress or accoutrements that he has

altogether laid aside。 His step too is measured and heavy察 and

would go well with a weighty clash and jingle of spurs。 He is close´

shaved now察but his mouth is set as if his upper lip had been for

years familiar with a great moustache察 and his manner of

occasionally laying the open palm of his broad brown hand upon

it察is to the same effect。 Altogether察one might guess Mr George to

have been a trooper once upon a time。

A special contrast Mr George makes to the Smallweed family。

Trooper was never yet billeted upon a household more unlike him。

It is a broadsword to an oyster knife。 His developed figure察 and

their stunted forms察his large manner察filling any amount of room察

and their little narrow pinched ways察his sounding voice察and their

sharp spare tones察 are in the strongest and the strangest

opposition。 As he sits in the middle of the grim parlour察leaning a

little forward察 with his hands upon his thighs察 and his elbows

squared察 he looks as though察 if remained there long察 he would

absorb into himself the whole family and the whole four´roomed

house察extra little back´kitchen and all。

^Do you rub your legs to rub life into ¨em拭院 he asks of

Grandfather Swallweed察after looking round the room。

    ^Why察it¨s partly a habit察Mr George察and!yes!it partly helps

the circulation察院he replies。

^The cir´cu´la´tion 院repeats Mr George察folding his arms upon

his chest察and seeming to become two sizes larger。 ^Not much of

that察I should think。 ̄

    ^Truly I¨m old察Mr George察院says Grandfather Smallweed。 ^But

I can carry my years。 I¨m older than her察院nodding at his wife察 and

see what she is You¨re a brimstone chatterer 院 with a sudden

revival of his late hostility。

^Unlucky old soul 院 says Mr George察 turning his head in that

direction。 ^Don¨t scold the old lady。 Look at her here察 with her

poor cap half off her head察 and her poor chair all in a muddle。

Hold up察 ma¨am。 That¨s better。 There we are Think of your

mother察Mr Smallweed察院says Mr George察coming back to his seat

from assisting her察 if your wife an¨t enough。 ̄

^I suppose you were an excellent son察Mr George察院the old man

hints察with a leer。

The colour of Mr George¨s face rather deepens察 as he replies察

^Why no。 I wasn¨t。 ̄

    ^I am astonished at it。 ̄

^So am I。 I ought to have been a good son察and I think I meant

to have been one。 But I wasn¨t。 I was a thundering bad son察that¨s

the long and the short of it察and never was a credit to anybody。 ̄

    ^Surprising 院cries the old man。

^However察院 Mr George resumes察 the less said about it the

better now。 Come You know the agreement。 Always a pipe out of

the two months¨ interest 。Bosh It¨s all correct。 You needn¨t be

afraid to order the pipe。 Here¨s the new bill察 and here¨s the two
