^I know him by sight察院says Mr Jobling。

^You know him by sight。 Very well。 And you know little Flite拭院

    ^Everybody knows her察院says Mr Jobling。

^Everybody knows her。 Very well。 Now it has been one of my

duties of late察 to pay Flite a certain weekly allowance察 deducting

from it the amount of her weekly rent察 which I have paid in

consequence of instructions I have received to Krook himself察

regularly察 in her presence。 This has brought me into

communication with Krook察and into a knowledge of his house and

his habits。 I know he has a room to let。 You may live there察 at a

very low charge察under any name you like察as quietly as if you were

a hundred miles off。 He¨ll ask no questions察and would accept you

who has suddenly lowered his voice察 and become familiar again察

^he¨s an extraordinary old chap!always rummaging among a

litter of papers察and grubbing away at teaching himself to read and

write察 without getting on a bit察 as it seems to me。 He is a most

extraordinary old chap察 sir。 I don¨t know but what it might be

worth a fellow¨s while to look him up a bit。 ̄

    ^You don¨t mean !拭院Mr Jobling begins。

^I mean察院 returns Mr Guppy察 shrugging his shoulders with

becoming modesty察 that I can¨t make him out。 I appeal to our

mutual friend Smallweed whether he has or has not heard me

Tony察院says Mr Guppy察 and it¨s seldom I can¨t make a man out察

more or less。 But such an old card as this察 so deep察 so sly察 and

secret though I don¨t believe he is ever sober察 I never came

across。 Now察he must be precious old察you know察and he has not a

soul about him察 and he is reported to be immensely rich察 and

whether he is a smuggler察 or a receiver察 or an unlicensed

pawnbroker察or a money´lender!all of which I have thought likely

at different times!it might pay you to knock up a sort of

knowledge of him。 I don¨t see why you shouldn¨t go in for it察when

everything else suits。 ̄

Mr Jobling察Mr Guppy察and Mr Smallweed察all lean their elbows

on the table察 and their chins upon their hands察 and look at the

hands in their pockets察and look at one another。

with a sigh。 ^But there are chords in the human mind! ̄

Expressing the remainder of the desolate sentiment in rum´and´

water察 Mr Guppy concludes by resigning the adventure to Tony

Jobling察 and informing him that during the vacation and while

things are slack察 his purse察 as far as three or four or even five

Mr Guppy adds with emphasis察 that William Guppy turned his

incidental way。

    ^There was a verdict。 Accidental death。 You don¨t mind that拭院

^No察院 says Mr Jobling察 I don¨t mind it察 but he might as well

have died somewhere else。 It¨s devilish odd that he need go and

die at my place 院 Mr Jobling quite resents this liberty察 several

times returning to it with such remarks as察 There are places

However察 the compact being virtually made察 Mr Guppy

proposes to despatch the trusty Smallweed to ascertain if Mr

Krook is at home察 as in that case they may complete the

negotiation without delay。 Mr Jobling approving察Smallweed puts

himself under the tall hat and conveys it out of the dining´rooms in
